so I took some more pics of my early Viking kit and while still not 100% truly accurate I like how it looks. Just gotta get the money to replace the cheap amazon costume mail with real mail, then get a shield and a helmet that isn’t too large.

Cool! But I sense the absence of a round shield.

That's one rich Viking to have a shirt of maille like that. Did he trade his shield for it?
Seriously, though, nice outfit!

Nice. I considered costume maille for now too lol. It's so expensive, considering it's not functional. But it would look wicked. I saw some nice riveted aluminum maille that I feel would do the job for now
You need a shield definitely. So do I, I might just make mine. I don't think any vikings historically used a Rotella, but I like to imagine they did when I practice

nerdthenord, are you a berserker? Drink the magic mushroom laced booze and work yourself into a beastial frenzy? I watched a documentary on the real viking berserkers and they did that before battle. One story goes that a berserker held off dozens of English soldiers single-handedly. He died, but the English were severely beaten and could not pursue the others. Of course, I also find what my Celtic ancestors did to be equally amusing. Men and women would drink themselves into a drunken stupor and go fight bare butt naked.

So 2 quick ways to improve your kit... 1. Your belt is too wide, shoot for about 1/2" thick. 2. Winnegas will help the look. (leg wraps) 3. A nice floppy hat. That was 3 wasn't it? Great kit though!

Thanks. From what I understand though Winnegas were more of an eastern and southern thing, like Sweden and Denmark, while they were less common in Norway, which is what my kit is somewhat aiming for, with the sword being Norwegian and all. A belt, yeah i could use a better belt. A hat would be nice too.

I've also heard a more recent hypothesis is that Berserkers rubbed henbane on their skin, rather than drinking magic mushrooms, and that gave them dulled senses including pain, as well as other things. They actually have found Henbane in some warrior graves if I remember right. And yeah, The Berserker at Stamford Bridge was awesome but the Norwegian army was ultimately still slaughtered (After giving a good fight at least) and King Harald Hardrada was slain, providing a convenient (if not entirely accurate) stopping point for the Viking Age in history textbooks.

Another theory is they drank the urine of a man who has consumed the mushrooms. At least the no-fear-to-die-thing is comprehensible this way.

You know, I've never really bought the magic mushroom theory. I've taken shrooms and never once did I wanna attack anyone. In fact, I would rather be sober if attacking someone, shrooms would probably make me go cry in a corner during battle and ponder my life choices of choosing to become a berserker

Opposite of anger. I suppose if you put shrooms in a concoction with other stuff containing anger inducing & pain reduction elements than maybe.

Maybe it's the fear that causes em to lash out at everything for all I know, now that I think of it. But I question theories they have like that, especially when they use it to explain any phenomena, as if the ridde is now solved lol

So reality will forever be sandwiched between myth & legend. Much of the effect was certain profiled individuals mentally working themselves into a frenzy, so much more than just potion consumption.

It's definitely a possibility but I feel like we should have at least one present day example of such a brew being made and tested. I just wonder what it's founded on Tbh of there is sources that even imply it, I wouldn't be against giving em a read. Like with most things, I probably just haven't seen the right sources

Combo of steroids, HGH, PCP, LSD, meth, etc...

But for all I know there is a source that says it was less help than it was good. I imagine if it was a popular idea shared around enough someone would come along with the information to debunk it I wonder why no one debunks stuff early on. It's always when it becomes a wide spread factoid

I did some thinking today and I came to a theory. They have evidence that both were used, yes? I am thinking that they drank the mushroom laced booze to work themselves into the frenzy and rubbed the henbane on themselves to minimize the pain. Given the information that we have it does fit. Oh, by the way, you said that you do not drink, but you did not say anything about taking the magic mushrooms. 😹😹😹😹

Oh, by the way, you said that you do not drink, but you did not say anything about taking the magic mushrooms. 😹😹😹😹 Thing is we don't actually have evidence anything was used. We've found Henbane in graves, and that's it. There's no hard evidence it was actually used for berserking, just conjecture, and there is no evidence at all if I remember right that mushrooms were used. Berserkers also had contradictory and sometimes impossible attributes assigned to them in stories so anything without hard evidence should be taken with a grain of salt. Like, there is absolutely no way a warrior was magically immune to bladed weapons while raging but could be easily killed by a wooden club. That's just fiction right there. And yes, it literally said was immune to bladed weapons, not that he could just ignore pain. Hell, we don't even know for sure if Berserker meant they went into battle wearing bear pelts or went into battle naked (Bare).
