May thy knife chip and shatter (and melt if you leave it on the radiator)!

Doesn’t look at all what I envisioned as I read the books. Of course that is not a surprise. Should be a translucent white/cream color. Never in the books did it mention any engraving but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any. What made it a personal/ bonded to the carrier was just carrying it on your person afair. If taken away or lost it would dissolve after some time. Very disappointing but never expected much to start with. Edit: And $159. RIIIGHT. It does look translucent white to me, you can see the model's fingers through the blade in one of the pictures. You are correct, I did not go that far into the photos. My bad. Doesn’t change my opinion.

I always wanted a proper Crysknife, accurate to the description in the book. I wondered how one would make a functional one? Ceramic? Amber or a some form of gem? Natural agate could be used. Possible to put an edge on with knapping, I have ground usable edges on fantasy style stone knives I have made some years ago, (no images sorry). Ground from a single thick enough piece should be easy enough but time consuming, handle would be integral part. If I can find some stone I may give it a go over the next couple of weeks and report back.

I might have ground the edges down back then I'll keep an eye out for some as well. I also got a big chunk of quartz with thin slivers of gold veins in it, I considered trying that out

If it's supposed to be a tooth, some form of calcium phosphate would be appropriate. I'd expect that some form of hard proteinaceous material would be present as well, and that the edges would be finely serrated like shark's teeth. I had a link here on calcium phosphate cements, but the obscenity filter doesn't like the link's name.

I have a piece of this stuff left, some white onyx I have had for many years. Would not be a functional knife in the literal sense but would be better than plastic. Have a little agate as well, but would be around six inches, narrow. Is there any idea of what the dimensions would be overall? 8 inches.

A sandworm tooth, something that resists permanent sandblasting, rather diamond than enamel.

A sandworm tooth, something that resists permanent sandblasting, rather diamond than enamel. I'd agree that in reality something like diamond or alumina would be present, but Herbert wasn't known for writing hard science fiction. His entire setup in Dune was a hollow plot device to support the society he wanted to play with. Sandworms themselves don't make sense biologically. Dune's ultimately as much a fantasy as LOTR or Frozen. The crysknife Herbert describes is a big, sharp tooth.

Yup, but "harder than enamel" is on the same scientific level as "bigger than an earthworm"!

Yup, but "harder than enamel" is on the same scientific level as "bigger than an earthworm"! Silica would work, if the teeth were shed/renewed often enough, and the teeth would be laying all over the place. In that case, the thing would basically be a flint knife, which is not the impression I got from the book, nor were piles of worm teeth mentioned.

Explains why they want it to chip. Now I wanna get into Flint napping (knapping?)
