Doesn’t look at all what I envisioned as I read the books. Of course that is not a surprise. Should be a translucent white/cream color. Never in the books did it mention any engraving but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any. What made it a personal/ bonded to the carrier was just carrying it on your person afair. If taken away or lost it would dissolve after some time. Very disappointing but never expected much to start with.
Edit: And $159. RIIIGHT.

I just assumed it was your name lol I agree tho. I dunno if I have faith in this new movie either. I'm hoping it's at least worth watching. I always wanted a proper Crysknife, accurate to the description in the book. I wondered how one would make a functional one? Ceramic? Amber or a some form of gem?

I always wanted a proper Crysknife, accurate to the description in the book. I wondered how one would make a functional one? Ceramic? Amber or a some form of gem? I've seen moderately functional knives made of deer leg bones (femur, I believe). Score the bone down the middle with something abrasive, then the bone can be split. Sets you up with the start of an edge that can be ground into a better shape. Or, Space Drugs, you'd make it out of Space Drugs. Sorry, I recently re-read all six of the original Frank Herbert Dune books (never touched the Brian Herbert/KJA stuff). The crysknife as shown doesn't look quite right to me either. Of course, in the books, they fight with 'rapiers', kindjals, pellet guns and other crazy stuff. In the trailers the swords look like some kind of wakizashi/ko-katana/messer-type thing. Maybe that's what rapiers look like in 10,191 AG. I'm actually psyched for the film(s). It will probably be more enjoyable for Dune fans if we just take the movie as its own thing, rather than trying to hold it accountable to the books (even though Villenueve/screen writers are claiming to do so as much as possible). I was able to enjoy Peter Jackson's LOTR films more than I otherwise would have, via this approach. And, many of us hate to love David Lynch's Dune (1984) - Herbert himself approved of it, even though much of it is barely recognizable from the book. I will never understand why Frank Herbert approved of Lynch's Dune, but disapproved of Iron Maiden's 'To Tame a Land' . . .

It wasn't much like the books, but I suppose if I can enjoy a hated film maybe I'll enjoy this new one Fantastic idea about the bone. I might try this sometime

Dandelion started two threads about the Dune movie. One had previews and some things looked good and some looked bad. The ornithopters looked great. The swords shown in the other thread were bad. They used kinjdals and rapiers not the tacticool swords shown. And everyone is out in the desert without their faces covered with the stilsuit masks on but you gotta show the actor’s faces. Zen Hydra started a thread about making a crysknife. Lot of info there but don’t know if he ever made one. I think bone would be good as it can be softened and shaped. I think a lot of people think my name is Paul but it’s not although it is my favorite male name.

I think the look is ok, I don't have a specific vision from the books. Much depends on the material of the blade. Sandworm tooth... ceramic? I'd like a special edition made of ceramic plates of space shuttle heat shields!

I think my problem with a knife made from a sand worm tooth is scale. Sandworms are HUGE, Gargantuan- EPIC. So how big are the teeth? If they have *tiny* teeth, to scale, they may still be the size of mature oak trees. Soooo, Monster Hunter World scale at the smallest.

Rambletree, that is my attitude towards the movie, just sit back and enjoy it the best I can. Like what they get right and endure what they don’t. And I realize, with only a very few exceptions, a movie will never be as good as the book. Especially one of this scope. Fortunately I hadn’t read the LOTR books for many years so thoroughly enjoyed the movies. I reread the first three books and read the last thee for the first time last summer so can’t say I’ll have forgotten too much by the time the movie comes out.

Could make many knives out of one tooth or just use the tip of the tooth. Plus there are 10 million fremen and all their knives dissolve after death so they would need new ones. Also they kill baby ones to get the super spice drug for their ritual orgies. So smaller teeth there.

I always thought a crys knife has the size of a knife or dagger (surprise! ). Perhaps sandworms have maaany small teeth (my bet, like shark skin) or they use young sandworm teeth or they carve it out of bigger teeth, who cares? The design of the UC crys isn't bad, I like it. Less LOTR elvish but somehow organic and minimalistic. Much depends on the look and feeling of the blade. I hope it isn't cheap plastic.

I always thought of them as a curved dagger about 11”/28cm with a 7@/18cm blade. Just my idea. And Andi, I usually agree with you on most things we have in common but for me that blade looks very elvish. The shape, the engraving. And it’s definitely not cheap plastic. It’s $159 plastic. Not cheap in my book.

Less elvish I think, but a bit fantasy tribal style. At least no squiggles in blade or crossguard. The plastic? Buy low, sell high...

I always thought of it like more of an upswept, persian style blade... a bit like the outline of the ZT Scyllis, but made from bone with some sort of cord wrap handle, of course... The Lynch's Dune crysknife version wasn't too bad IMHO, actually, just a bit stubby...

The Lynch's Dune crysknife version wasn't too bad IMHO, actually, just a bit stubby... Actually neurotic the Lynch one does check a few boxes, the color is closer to what I’ve always thought. Maybe a little more white and a little translucent would be better. The upswept blade idea of both is spot on. The Way it’s described in the book, afair, there is a ring for a guard similar to say a riser on a euro grip. I don’t remember right now if the grip was described but I’d have to think it would be oval to some degree. Now length ways the grip could be any of a lot of shapes. They were carving them so could make almost any shape. Smooth and curved like the Lynch or the shape of a tanto or tapered at one or both ends. Take your pick or make one of your own. Definitely no metal though. And honestly, I never thought there was any carving on them but it could be. Woah, just thought of something as I was typing that. In the scene where Paul is going to fight with a crysknife he is wondering about it makeup when his opponent says the traditional, can’t think of the term, maybe salutation, “May your crysknife break and chip.” So, I wouldn’t think you’d want carving in them. Or maybe you would, who knows. Of course this is all just my humble opinion. I’m not going to get bent out of shape if anyone disagrees with me. I mean we’re talking about fiction for goodness sake’s. Edit: I can’t remember what it’s called it the concave part right behind the sharp part of the blade is wrong. Again imho.

It does look translucent white to me, you can see the model's fingers through the blade in one of the pictures.
