So, I spoke to FedEx customer service again this morning. Fortunately, I managed to get hold of someone in the UK. She explained that they had incorrectly sent the information to the wrong team, or something. According to her, I can expect to hear back from them by Monday. I'm expecting to hear that the sword was destroyed, sadly.
If FedEx refuse compensation, I'll speak to MyUs, since they assured me that FedEx would accept swords, and even linked me to the prohibited goods page on the FedEx website to prove it.

Well, Fedex never got back to me, but the tracker finally updated to say it's in Memphis TN, so it appears to have been found! Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to get it into the UK...I'm hearing a lot of contradictory things at the moment, even on this thread. Argh.

I'm hearing a lot of contradictory things at the moment, even on this thread. Argh. The members of this forum are not in the shipping business, lawyers, etc. They are offering their experiences and suggestions. While what they experienced back when, the laws and conditions could very well have changed since. Simply put what worked yesterday may not work today. As time rolls on it’s becoming more difficult to ship internationally. You might find something to help here: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/61452/updating-international-shipping-situation

Naturally, I wouldn't expect anyone here to be an expert on the subject. I was merely expressing frustration at a very difficult situation. Nobody here need feel offended.

I'll be shipping 3 curved swords + 1 straight sword to my student in UK next week. This time I need to put document on the box for declaration and let's hope things go smooth.

I have the feeling it's mostly luck as well if things go smooth or not.

My parcel left UK customs alright it seems. That's good. What did you say when customs asked you to declare what's in the package? I told them upfront it was a sword, and linked to the product page, but the package was still returned to sender. It's not clear to me whether it was customs or Fedex that classified it as "prohibited".
My sword has now been returned to the MyUs warehouse, so at least I know it hasn't been lost. But they informed me yesterday that they can't ship swords using any service. I just wish they'd told me that in October, before I wasted a lot of time and money attempting to ship using Fedex...

They didn't even ask me because I included letter on the box. I said "antique replica" and have many specification listed to show that it's traditionally forged.

I am not familiar with the UK laws but swords in my country are considered weapons and fall into that category making importation difficult. However there’s a quirk in the law making replicas exempt. So for declaration I state “unsharpened replica” or simply “replica” depending.

One thing you might try is going to a sword vendor nearest you and speak to the owner or manager, someone in authority not the counter man and explain your situation. Ask him if he would accept the sword doing the paper work and his fee. This is a common practice in the USA when buying a firearm not readily available otherwise. Many times it boils down to the wording one puts on the forms. Also the vendor will have the proper papers to import.
