My review of a high-end reproduction of medieval knightly arming sword, the Albion Prince--an Oakeshott type XVI single-handed sword popular in the first half of the 14th century. I talked extensively about the context of warfare and the development of armor during this transitional period between the age of maille armor and the days of full plate harness, and how armor influenced the evolution of sword designs. I found the Albion Prince to be a perfect example of the middle-of-the-road late medieval arming swords that's balanced between cut and thrust, and can serve as an implement for sword & buckler combat in civil context, as well as being a capable side arm in war.
The sword weighs 1132g (2.5lbs) with a 32" blade, a 4" grip with octagonal cross section, a faceted variant of the type K pommel and a flamboyant version of the type 1 cross guard. The blade has a medium width fuller that runs 2/3 of the blade length, and transitions into a central ridge with a full flat ground diamond cross section. It features incredibly smooth surfaces with an even high-satin finish. The blade is made of 6150 spring steel, heat treated to 52-54 HRC hardness, and demonstrate a proper flexibility for a type XVI sword. I gave more detailed statistics including the distal taper and profile taper, point of balance in the video and demonstrated the sword's traits such as the blade flexibility and fit & finish in 4K resolution footage. I also discussed its handling characteristics in both single-handed usage and sword and buckler forms and techniques.
Comparisons to earlier medieval arming sword types such as the type XII XIII, and XIV are also offered. I also talked about the situation about Albion swords' scabbard and my commission to a custom project of the scabbard with the sword belt. Please enjoy the video and find out about my final verdict on this sword.
My Albion Prince is priced at $1210 (MSRP)+$35 (custom antique blue grip leather color)+$80 (DBK cross bottony pommel decor)=$1325
