I been watching a lot of Tod Cutlery videos and see how he uses medieval style bolts in a modern crossbow and I'm kind of wanting to the the same
I'm not sure if he measures them to be the size of arrow his crossbow normally uses. Does arrow size affect the trajectory a lot? What would happen if I used standard arrows in a crossbow?

Does arrow size affect the trajectory a lot? What would happen if I used standard arrows in a crossbow? Only just saw this. Arrows and bolts need to be the correct spine for the poundage and draw length. Basically, shooting a 25 lb spined arrow (or bolt) out of a 70lb bow would be a big no. It could, and most likely would cause serious damage to the bow and even the shooter as the energy transferral and flex are not sufficient for the heavier poundage hence a literal catastrophic failure. As bolts are quite a bit shorter than arrows, this increases the spine.Dependant on the weight of the head. Putting a 200grain head on would mean the shaft would flex more,a 110 grain head would flex less. So,crossbows generally need much heavier spined shafts to prevent damage to user and bow and would be best to talk to whomever you source the bow from regarding the correct length, spine and head weight for efficient and safe shooting.

I think the grain is only about 120 grains as opposed to 50-80 of the field points so they aren't much heavier, my bolts are 400 or 450. My bolts are 20" and rated for my crossbow (200lbs) so they should be fine with these heads. I considered making the bolts stiffer by putting bicycle tire spokes, as I've heard about adding weight that way
I do wanna buy some pile driver bolts too. I totally forgot I intended to buy some. Nice choice on broadheads too. I ended up going with mine cause I like the look haha. They look so cool
I been going with heavier bolts because I heard it helps prevent breakage, as a lot of modern crossbows tend to break due to the creators suggesting too light of bolts, in order to artificially prop up the speed the crossbow shoots the bolt
Also thanks for the information on bolt length. A part of me wanted to cut down my old arrows to make bolts out of but rather than potentially ruin my bow I would rather buy new ones haha.
I was considering wooden cause I've seen tod cutler do it, but I'll stick with carbon fiber, which is more affordable and readily available anywway

They are awesome man, super durable. And because they are built strong and tough and only 20 inches long you can get away with a lot of weight in the broadhead. I mean I am telling you this bolt was smashing my target. You put a heavy grain broadhead on one of those puppies. Preferably 200+ grains. You will blow through almost anything. Don't concern with fps, go with heavier weight and front of center balance. It will punch through even heavy bone when set up like that. If you can't find broadheads that heavy you can buy screw in brass inserts. Sounds like just what I need to hunt windego. How many bolts to you own and how many would you take hunting

Sounds like just what I need to hunt windego. How many bolts to you own and how many would you take hunting Indeed these matched with your crossbow would deal with anything in North America easily. Natural or unnatural lol. I would say these are such quality bolts that you would need no more then 12 at max because they will last a long time. I would say dealing with one creature, taking 6 with you on a hunt should suffice. So taking over 20 would be over kill then haha Good to know though. I think I'll get 12 pile driver bolts and keep my old ones for spares
