I'm trying to find a good source for high quality lengths of hickory which include enough of a root ball to allow for the construction of a functional ball-headed war club (or more than one depending on price and availability).
I'm willing to entertain the notion of other hardwoods, but would prefer hickory from a North American source.
¿Please to advice?

Where are you located, generally, Zen? Maple might be easier to find.

Should be some hickory in your area, then. Probably on hillsides above creeks. Same place you’d find post oaks. Hillside hickory would be better for the purpose too because the root ball will be offset. If you can, go hunting for saplings.

I appreciate the advice, but time is the resource I have least of, which is why I am looking to make a purchase rather than go hunting for a viable tree in the wild.
