This sword was ordered by my wife as part of a his and hers daisho. I'll be reviewing her wakizashi later. I didn't have particularly high expectations for this katana, but it exceeded those. The casting quality of the fittings was better than I expected. If the variety of koshirae and selections you can make to "customize" the katana is important to you, I think SoN is not a bad deal, but for me, I'd rather get another HuaWei.

Great review! The kanji does indeed translate to "kyle", so hey, not to worry  Seams like a ok budget sword, but the casting quality of that guard.... |

I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't notice the tsuba casting issues until after I was done recording. Those flaws are not really acceptable, and I wish I'd taken a bit more time in editing to address it better. Oh well, everything is a learning process.

Nicely done review. It's good you already have a Huawei to compare against and can notice the difference in quality.

well a year late but i did watch this and the followup.
My Hanwei Raptor is wrapped katatemaki but the menuki seemed to be pinned on top of the ito rather than the ito wrapping around the menuki like in this sword. They may be glued, I dunno but they don't budge.
Now maybe if they had alternated each ito wrap layer to over/under rather than just 2 layers, they'd likely be tighter.
i've also read that the synthetic silk/cloth ito will get loose over time compared to silk which is why silk is preferable.

Just so everyone knows,I bought a custom katana from swords of northshire and let me tell you,I got everything I wanted and more and wow the customer service,I dealt with Hogi and wow from the beginning before I was a paying customer this guy answered all my questions and treated me like I mattered,he answered me with in 24 hours of me emailing him.So when I did receive my katana,I did notice a small split in the saya,so I sent Hogi an email with some pictures of the split,and he answered me within hours of my email being sent and replied that he was going to have a new saya made to replace it. I only wish other companies would take notes on customer service from them,the world would be so much better!!!!! So hats off to Hogi and sword of northshire,I would definitely recommend them,the katana I received was flawless,and I can't be mad about the saya,stuff like that happens,it's what they do about the things that go wrong, that's what matters the most,and wow they had no problem with taking care of it. So if you are looking for a place to get a katana from,they are the place to go through,you won't be disappointed,you will walk away feeling like me, completely content with your purchase, and with the assurance that if something goes wrong it will be fixed to your satisfaction,thank you,Hogi and swords of northshire!!!!!
