Im looking for to make a tsuka for a home made tanto and the tang is fully square (not diamond shaped like tradional ones) its a modern version so to say. Is it a bad idea to carv out the tang part in a piece of wood and then just glue on a flat piece of wood on the other side and just shape the tsuka after the glue is dry or will this construction not be structurally hard enough even if i wrap it with ito? The sheath will be a kydex one so no need for a saya.

I've done this before. The only issue I had was it took a lot more work to get it even on the other side, with more wood. Other than that, I'm willing to bet it's stronger than having the seem line up with the middle of the tang. Pretty sure Japanese makers typically make it deeper on one side to make use of this structural advantage

I would suggest using a pin as a safety measure and not relying solely on the glue.

I misunderstood and thought you had intended to glue everything. Share photos of your finished product with us.
Or better photos of the various stages of your build.

No problem, i was maybe a bit unclear with what i meant but just glue the tsuka together the normal way the way i wrote and then wrap with ito and then use a normal mekugi to fasten it to the tang. I will share photos but i have not even started yet and i need to get all the tools first haha. Just doing a lot of research at the moment.
