I was just wondering what everybody's view on this might be. Swords take the spotlight but out of the rest of the field what enjoys widespread popularity? Axes, spears, maces and war hammers in general seem to edge out most pole arms, flails and that kind of thing. I get the impression axes are probably in second place behind swords.

I'd go with spears. Followed by probably a tie between axes and flails then pole arms, though pole arms may rank among spears...since spears are technically pole arms...but I'm going with Halberds etc. here. Hammers I don't think saw much use...at least I've not seen them terribly widely documented, but then I've not really done much studying in the field, so I'm basing observations on what little I've...observed.

If I can't have a sword, I'll take my giant maul, thank you very much. It's not too practical, but I sure wouldn't want to get hit by it... For practicality, a polearm would suffice.

If we are talking in terms of historical use the spear and the axe were the most popular weapons on the battlefield, the sword did not really gain a supremacy until between 1200-1400. If you are talking in terms of todays market, I would say that the axe comes behind the sword, axes of all types including polearm axes. I personally find axes more interesting than I do swords but each to his own.

To clarify I meant what is the most popular among modern enthusiasts. I was wondering because while there are a number of high end sword makers it seems that most of the replicas of non-sword Medieval weapons are of lower quality on average. Do you think there is any latent demand for high quality non-sword weapons?
I've always considered spears to be in a class of their own rather than among other pole arms. I'm not really sure exactly why, it just seems right somehow. I suppose it's because while I've heard of legendary spears I've never heard of any particularly romantic halberds or pikes.

Well spears are pretty well made. Axes would be my guess for second after swords.

I'd be more inclined towards the custom, mostly because A&A don't have much that actually interests me except for a few of their complicated hilt swords.

Rocks are good. I just augment mine with a bit of cord. An old fashioned hand sling throwing a rock of a couple ounces can near the energy levels of a handgun, just not the penetration because that force is spread out over the surface of a larger, less dense projectile.

Do I smell a Rock Buyer's Guide on the horizon? ;D I can't wait to see someone argue the historical accuracy of a particular rock... Personally, I've always had a fondness for axes, but I'm becoming much more interested in spears as time goes by. They do appear to have been the dominant weapon for a loooonnnnngggg time, so i figure they can't be all bad...

The bow was good for range (the "gun" of its day, you might say), but not really of use in melee fighting (hence, the outfitting of archers with secondary weapons: swords, hammers, etc). Granted, a spear could be thrown, but not very far, and certainly not as far as an arrow or bolt. So, I would rank bows as excellent for initial volleys or keeping an enemy at bay for awhile, but not for up-close fighting.

Krieg: My opinion of the spear is that it is a sword combined with a staff. It can do the same things a spear can and it does what a quarterstaff can as well. You combine the two you have a very versatile and lethal weapon. Quarterstaff is my weapon of choice in all situations except maybe a gunfight. Short spears, hewing spears for example are quite amazing and they almost teach you how to use them just picking them up, although I have that with more weapons that I handle.
I must say though that there is just something beautiful, brutal and badass and I love the way that axes move.

This could be a great business venture for me and RicWilly. Let's buy the domain name and start reviewing! I think we should focus on sub-$300 rocks, at least initially... ;D
