I'm fairly new to swords; I've gone from none to three in about three months (Someone here said that would happen. God! You're like a bunch of addicts, just dying to share your pain! Jerks!). Currently using an old, 2-sided stone that I've had around for years to sharpen my knife collection. I don't know its numbers or anything, but it works fine. My new Cheness SGC Yamakami Wakizashi is "Oh my god!" sharp.
A bit of advice: when sharpening, don't mistake your finger as an extension of the stone. I tend to personify my toys, giving them personality and "voices" as one would a puppy dog (I do that, too). I imagined my newest sword being jealous of my older one (by a month) because "she" has tasted blood (I almost dropped her and in the fumble, she stabbed me slightly in the achiles area). Well, the new guy doesn't have to be jealous any longer. I was sitting here a few minutes ago, watching TV and running the stone along his edge, and "Yeeeeeeeaaaaaah!" (squirt, squirt).
So, just my expert insight: don't get your finger between the stone and the blade.

Here's a link. www.bestsharpeningstones.com/ Everything you need for a truly clean, polished edge. I own some Arkansas stones in different grades, and they deliver some great results. I would like to get some of the slurry stones in the future as well. It will take more time and care with stones like these, but the results are deffinately worth it if you need a keen edge.

Rick- How is that puck? I have never used it but I think it would work really good on swords.
Wiwingti- I have a lot of different types of sharping tools, and my favorite is the DMT hand held diamond tool. It folds up like a butterfly knife and it is easy to take with you where ever you go.

Ray, I like the puck, I've used a few different tools and methods and it's my current favorite. I finish off with a ceramic rod.

I just went out and bought a puck today. Me likes. I find it easier to get a firm hold on than the average block.

Wiwi, I don't care for it myself. First it costs too much, second it doesn't look like it would work well for my method which requires that the stone be held in the hand and worked on a stationary blade.
