If what I'm about to write hijacks your thread please holler, and I'll post it in a new thread.
What do sword collectors do about scabbards?
I almost feel like I'm borderline, "weird," about scabbards. I have a great-sword type on-order and I am literally stressing about the scabbard. The primary reason is, I don't want to ship-off my new toy somewhere for 12 to 18 months. However even worse, is the thought of my new toy without a scabbard. I just really like my swords to have scabbards. So I'm willing to wait but it ain't easy.
In January I sent one of my favorite swords to a really reputable scabbard maker. He doesn't have a sword-cam so I can look at it. I swear I would send him a USB or WiFi camera if he could just show me my sword!
Its to the point where I'll only buy Albions. Those great scabbard makers who have Albions on-hand or have done enough Albions that they have the schematics are a prize. You mean you can make me a scabbard and I don't have to send you my toy? Where do I sign?
Unfortunately my great-sword in the queue is not an Albion so its got to go somewhere. I'd prefer to have the manufacturer ship it directly to the scabbard maker so I'm hunting around too.
I'm a rookie in this domain so wondering what the vets do?

I had two ATrims, one from Kult of Athena and one from Gus himself, shipped directly to Valiant Armoury. They took about 2 weeks to make the scabbards and shipped them to me quite quickly.
I'm not sure where you're getting 12-18 months for the scabbard maker to have your sword, though. Sure, the wait lists might be that long, but they don't need to have your sword that entire time. For instance, I'm on Steve Huerta's waitlist for an Albion Reeve, and it's a 4-5 month wait. He said he'll contact me when he's about 2 weeks out from my spot in the list, and then I'll ship the sword to him. I don't know what his turnaround time is, but I'm positive it's not 12-18 months!

For the sword I mentioned that I sent to a reputable maker, he implied that I should send the sword in order to get into his work queue. I just re-read his emails and he didn't explicitly write that so maybe I misunderstood.
There are at least two well-known scabbard makers with 12 to 18 months queues. I'm in the queue for one of them, on another project. I've reached out to Steve Huerta based on your note, and appreciate that, for the great-sword.

For sending in a sword for a scabbard it should really only be a 1 to 1.5 month process. 1 week to ship in, 2 weeks to make, and 1 week to ship back. Maybe send it in 1 week early, an extra week for whatever, and you get a month and a half, or two.
Extra things can add to the adventure, and even an extra complex commission can make it longer. The most important thing is that the maker is communicative and clear as to what is going on.
