So. I have a long story. But basically, one of the "categories" of sword that I am aiming to find a best of,, is a short, double edged sword. Not heavy, but able to cut. I have some arming swords around 27" blade, I like them, but technically they are bigger than I mean. between 25" total size, and up to 30" total length is acceptable.
So, I have a picture of the three swords I have that mainly meet the size and shape. I have a number of swords that are close, but perhaps are single edged, or perhaps are too heavy, or perhaps are curved, or again just too long.
One of them is a budk sword, which I really like despite the fact that it is a stainless steel budget blade. The steel is easy to sharpen, holds an edge reasonably well (for the price,,, it does not compare to a good carbon steel sword, but it cuts a number of times before needing a quick hone). It's also VERY light, and although these stainless blades won't hold up to lawn work, (many people have broken them on sticks,, I understand) , I have cut some bottles and cardboard tubes, and I have gained confidence in what to expect, and how it can be useful, and the whole thing was like 30$ shipped (to hawaii).
One of them is a budk sword,, it's a shinwa double edged sword, and I removed the handle, broke the tang off,, and then used a hammer to blunt the blade where I have placed the handle. At first, because I was a newbie, I couldn't really cut with it, but now it is one of my better cutters. I didn't really change the sharpening, it's just that I improved my technique, and it cuts really well. I can do any target that I would normally cut, and I have a very high degree of confidence in the durability of it in it's current form . Also, surprisingly, I do not feel that it is a lot of hand shock, although I admit there is more handshock than some hilts.
finally, the shiny one is a budk sword,,,, it's a stainless steel costume gladius, with a rat tail tang. It came thick, blunt, and impossible to imagine using as a sword. I drilled a few holes and riveted some bars of mild steel as a handle, and tried to sharpen it,,, but alas, the steel is not good for holding an edge. Luckily, it soon became my favorite sword for exactly that reason. It is not completely dull, I can cut into boxes, cut tape, and cut wood with it,, it's strong,, but the edge is safe, I can have it out like an adult toy and not worry about poking myself on accident, it's like a gigantic butter knife. It's good for all sorts of sword-play where cutting isn't required, but a gladius would be amazing. (unboxing, mostly, but also just games with a hand extension etc). I didn't order this sword, it came in a random pack, I was unhappy and went complaining the list said razor sharp swords would be all of the contents,, but in the long run, this sword is one of my best.
So, the daywalker,,, maybe it will be a bit too long,, but it's going to be a really good version of these. It should be rough and tumble for the lawn, but hold a really nice edge for backyard cutting, and hopefully it will give me new opportunities to develop my cutting technique with a short double edged sword.
Yes,,, I did order a mongrel fat gladius that should weigh like ten pounds,, but it's not the ONLY kind of sword I like. This daywalker is just about the exact rendition of what I might have tried to buy to replace the blue sword, so crossing my fingers on that one.
