Hello All, Thank you for taking the time to read my thread and perhaps help. I purchased this new, many years ago. (around 2004) Bugei Bamboo Katana (Sweedish Powdered steel) - bugei.com/products/bamboo-katanaI have never used it for anything. It sits on a display stand and I clean/oil it about every 2-3 months with uchiko and choji. About 4 years ago, I noticed some dark spots on the spine. I cleaned the spots with Noxon. But, they reappear after a few months. When I shine a light on the spots, they reflect back as white. I have included pictures.
Is this rust? How do I cure this? Is it perhaps something bad happening in the saya? Any advise is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I had a similar era bugei samurai with the same issue but in a different spot. Turned out to be a gunked up saya probably caused by too much oil over the years.

I never did, I kept the blade out of the saya. It was bad enough it developed those spots daily. I eventually ended up selling the blade.
