So there is this guy trying to sell a new UC Museum Collection Sting on ebay for $7,000. Well, it didn't sell, so now he is asking $5,00 for it. I was baffled, So i contacted him. He claims, and he has shown me screenshots suggesting people have already submitted offers for outrageous prices like $1,300 and even $2,600. He claims the last one he saw sold for $3,000. I'm calling bs on the whole thing. A. that one sold for $3,000, and B. that he has offers as high as $2,600 for it. The reason being, I purchased a NEW MC sting a few short years ago for $200. At the time and even since then, the MC Sting has not been highly desirable and OFTEN sell for around $200. For whatever reason. Heck, if I could buy all the MC stings I have seen for around $200, and resell them for thousands, I could retire.
But I have never seen one sell for more than $300 or so. In fact the last unusual Sting I saw selling, was a screen used sting, and that only sold for around $7,000.... Heck, the UC MC Glamdring is considered the most sought after, I would say, and even that wouldn't fetch such a price if it were new. I've seen "new" Glamdrings go for around $3,000. So...I'm calling BS on the whole thing.
I guess I am almost mad that someone is trying to sell it for that much. But also just as mad that people are allegedly giving him attention and making insane offers of more than a few hundred...
So I wanted to throw it on here and get people's thoughts. Like, what?!

It is in demand but I would say between 350-500 dollars would get you one.
They're a bit rare so might take a year o two.

Omg, he allegedly sold it for $5,500. Yeah....ok. And if he did, I feel bad for the guy that spent literally $5,000 more than he should have to get it. Like wow. It almost makes me mad. Even a little sick to my stomach; that someone got taken advantage of so badly.
IF I ever sell mine, I will start it at what I paid for it, $200. If people want to pay outrageous prices for it, that's up to them. But I would not ask for more than what it is ACTUALLY worth. Just blows my mind what went on with this one....

There would be nothing wrong with selling yours for a bit more than you paid, particularly if the demand is there and that is what they indeed go for, but FIVE GRAND !?! Poor SOB may have been skinned alive.

The reason being, I purchased a NEW MC sting a few short years ago for $200. Was yours a full set? Case, Key, and COA? I'm still kicking myself for procrastinating too long when they had the sword by itself on sale for $150 . I'm still on the lookout for one at a decent price... Yeah, things like this bug me as well. Sure, most collectors know the rough value... but some innocent newbie will think "wow! a rare item!" and then overpay by thousands... The full sets i've seen sell for the $350 to $600 range usually, with the odd one or two going for higher. There was that MC Glamdring (complete) that i think sold for over $6,000!! I mean, at those prices, go custom. I love my UC LOTR swords, and understand the increase of value due to rarity - but there should be a limit. When a United Cutlery sword starts to sell for the same as a high end CUSTOM sword (and pretty much the same as the actual Peter Lyon WETA made versions)... it's out of control. That being said... a collectable is only as valuable as what someone is willing to pay for it. And as long as the buyer is happy with their purchase, that's all that matters.

Exactly! No, mine was not. Only came with the blade and scabbard. $150 for the sword is about right, but a great deal right now it seems! Man, ebay has been absolutely blowing up right now with UC LOTR swords but also the harder to find scabbards. Some of them are not getting astronomically high.... A Glamdring scabbard is currently up to a bit over $500.... But that is about right these days for it unfortunately. I paid about $600 for mine... But there haven't been any MC versions of anything I have seen at all recently other than that silly Sting sale. I can't remember if you saw my post about UC supposedly releasing a carbon Anduril sometime in 2021?! That would be super exciting of course. I hope they do. I am also waiting for the Magnoli Guthwine sword you mentioned! That should be pretty sweet. At least that one is definitely happening. And i just checked....are they ready?! The "Pre-order" blurb is gone!

AAhhh i see. Well then $200 was the going rate up until maybe last 2 years? Even now i personally wouldn't go more than $250/$300... But that's me. I think the problem with eBay is speculation of UC re-releasing a bunch of older swords. Between the UCForums and the LOTR FB page - there have been some hints dropped. I believe the WK sword and Wraith swords will be coming back. Glamdring's scabbard (not sure which colour though). Another run of Boromir's and Eowyn's swords. And because of that, people are rushing to sell them for as high as possible before those swords are public knowledge. In addition, i've seen newer collectors freaking out whenever BudK goes "out of stock". They immediately ask the group pages where to get one asap... not realizing most of the time BudK/UC will be restocking (things are just slower lately). Yuppers! I'm still looking forward to the new "MC" Anduril with carbon blade. Kit Rae still mentions it in passing, so i'm taking that as a good sign that project hasn't been scrapped yet lol. Replied to the Guthwine Q's on the other thread

Markets are formed by what people are willing to pay and the rarity of the item. Since its (currently) discontinued, I do understand that its value will rise, as it was a pretty fantastic piece! But $5,000 is INSANE!! I personally love mine and will not sell it, but if I ever did, I dont think its wrong to look at the market and come up with a fair price. But yeah... $5000 does seem a bit high, lol!
