Hi! First time posting here. I recently got a few swords at auction for pretty good prices. Two sabres are slightly confusing to me. First is, I'm 99% sure, an Italian 1860 cavalry sabre. The hilt is exact, according to excellent threads I've seen on this forum. As is the scabbard. However, the maker's mark on the blade is not the usual 'Hartkopf' but an 'A&E.H' mark, which I believe is a Holler? Does this mean that the blade is non-standard, or from a different year? Second sword looks similar to a 1912 cavalry sword, but seems to have a heavier, more curved blade. The blade is stamped Solingen, and the guard has a weird curl. The guard also has numbers and has a large 'B' stamped on it. My meagre research skills have turned up nothing useful about this. Any info you can give me to help solve these riddles will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Jon

UPDATE: I've found that the second sword is a Brazilian M1880 cavalry sabre. The stamped letter 'B' on the top side of the hilt is actually the last of three letters, 'E.U.B' which stand for Estados Unidos Brasil (United States of Brazil). So mystery solved!

Good catch for both of them.
The A&E.H(oller) firm was active from 1854 to 1885. No problem. The blades were sourced from different sources if the main contractor of the period could not keep up with demand. As the blades of all contractors underwent the same stringent tests, there is no reason to be afraid one blade is better than another from a different forge. The blades were hilted in Italy by the way. There should be some very small inspection stamps on the blade and the basket. These stamps are the first letters of the name of the inspector. There are lists somewhere were you can find the name and hence the period the inspector was in service. This would give you the approximate date of sabre construction. I think somewhere in my M1860 post these lists were mentioned. Maybe even the way to get hold of them. Maybe Pino has access?
Cheers.
