My lovely wife and daughter got this for my birthday! It's quite costly, and they had it sharpened. It's not something I really would have ever considered for myself and it has some issues.
The deer skull hilt is off set, meaning it does not line up with the lettering and doesn't form a "jaw", top skull is several millimeters off from bottom, if that makes sense.
Sharpening is great, probably the sharpest sword I've ever seen mrl do.
The biggest issue is the hoof pommel. This sucker came LOOSE. It can move up and down more than half an inch and free spins 360 degrees. When gripping it the whole thing just feels so loose.
I'm really not sure what to do, as it was a gift from the heart. But I don't want to be taken. I'm sure it must have been the better part of 400 dollars.
To me, that's outrageous for a sword to arrive with all of these issues. I've usually had good luck with windlass in the past.
I did contact them, but they just requested video or pictures.

I'd recommend taking the requested pictures and video of the problems and send it to them. Years ago I bought a dagger from MRL and bought the sharpening service, but they forgot to do the sharpening. I contacted them, they requested pictures. Once I provided them, MRL promptly refunded the cost of the sharpening.

Welcome to the Wacky World of Windlass. I have averaged one good sword for every four problem swords. That's why I usually only buy Windlass swords from KOA because they check them out before they ship them. Unfortunately about the only thing you can do is send it back to MRL or find someone else who can fix the problems.

Send that back and take a look at the fathers sword On ryansword.com with available solid brass fittings and true etched 1095 folded steel blades and fully customizable handles for about the same price

Ouch, sorry to hear it arrived with issues. I have the same sword. The deer skulls are actually separate pieces from the rest of the hilt. I know because the one I bought actually had them off completely. At that time I lived close to MRL - so when I visited to get my sword sharpened, they were kind enough to reattach the skulls. So that would be an easy fix. The pommel would drive me nuts, and for that alone I would try to get it exchanged. Definitely take the pictures and video and see what Windlass/MRL say. I have always had good experiences with their customer service. Best of luck!

Tell me about this fathers sword from Ryan sword... Anyone have any experience?
In case my kid still wants to give me a fathers sword. The video cutting the paint can is pretty cool.
I saw some YouTube videos where a guy in the comments mentioned issues with his Ryan sword atlantean. He seemed pretty upset and said that he really wasn't taken care of after reporting the issues.
MRL is at least a stand up company. They will approve the return and refund or exchange. I hate to do it, but probably going to ask for the refund because some internet sleuthing shows several folks having similar issues. Not really sure a new one wouldn't have problems.
I am interested in Ryan sword but I'm reading about some concerning things as well, and wish there was some US distribution centers or vendors maybe in case of an issue.

Having helped design the fathers sword with Ryan steel can tell you its the best constructed one other then Albion on the market. Also the most detailed. Having a triple pin full tang design with a 1095 folded blade with one of the best edge reduction out there. The runes are ground into the blade deeply Im not quite sure how it’s done. The brass fittings are solid brass cast from a mold. The handle can be modified for single hand or two hand lengths. The point of balance is very close to the guard and at 4lbs the lightest one out there also very well balanced that it doesn’t feel heavy in the hand. I think there’s a review on this forum. Also under new management the customer service is extremely good. Everyone that has purchased the fathers sword or the Conan sword has been extremely happy from what I have been told on Facebook. I urge you to do your research and you will be very happy
