I have an 1896 Solingen cavalry sabre that was demilitarized by Argentina by partially grinding off part of the Argentine national symbol that was on the guard. I would like to polish this down smooth and obtain a nice, mirrored surface where the symbol was. Can anyone give me an idea about the best way to do this? I realize that this will lessen the value of the sword to a collector but I do not plan to sell it; it is for my use only. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Walter Pics can be seen at: solingencavalrysabre.wetpaint.com/photos

Id probably start with 240 grit wet and dry on a cork block. If that is not going to cut it back try 180, then once the mess is worn off, work back up through the grades.
Then re-antiquing it is a whole separate issue.
