I have several smallish (~10'-15' high, trunk ~2' circumference) palm trees in my backyard. I was thinking of attaching some padding to one of them and using it as a makeshift pell. Anybody done this before?

I''d leave your trees to be trees and stick a 4x4 post in the ground. Then stick a tire on the post and hit the tire.

Thoughts... I killed a tree I used as a pell once. So...make one, unless you don't mind a dead tree (maybe) depending on your tool saavy, you can make a great one cheap or free...

I don't really like these palm trees much, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if it died, but I am concerned about the lack of give. I can't drop a 4x4 into the ground because my backyard is almost completely cemented over. I'll probably pick up a few tools this weekend and try to make one from 2x4s and a 4x4.

Consider one of those metal pole bases that is set or screwed into concrete. The base could be another tire filled with concrete, which would be sturdy but not permanently affixed. If you don't mind killing the tree, go for it, but when I kill trees with swords it's on uncultivated overgrown rainforested private land. I also have a city backyard and I treat my several trees there much nicer, as they will not be so easy to replace.

That'll do it. I'll also be setting up a new poll this month, so I'll document that. If you're wondering where to get an old tire, pull into any Les Schwab and ask for a junk tire. They're typically happy to give them to you.

Inspired by the instructions linked in my last post, I put together a water bottle cutting stand and my first pell.
