I came across this while trying to find a substitute for couple of pinuti videos that are no longer available and thought it might be of interest to some. It’s a cutting competition. In this case the contestants were free to select the type of blade they preferred. Shown is a machete, messer, pinuti, and bowies. All of which have their followings so I thought some of the members would enjoy.

Very interesting. I would think that the last round combo, even though all missed the scoring box, they all would have killed the man if it were real. Especially the neck jab right through the spinal cord; no walking away from that one.

Ah, the short blades symposium. If I were ever to actually go to an organized sword event, that's the one.

That looks like a lot of fun. Is there a standard set of rules or customs for this kind of thing?

Me and Markus cutting Tatami with our bowies in that gym while Brother Rufus is in the background doing iaido. Really skilled cutters! Awesome stuff, loved the bowie part haha! Looks like they need to work on the bowie craft to have it up to par with the messer work. I believe I would have possibly bested them on the bowie cuts(Especially with the Natchez they are using) and the defanging the snake cut and stab but the rest was 👌. I thought of you and Markus when the bowies came out and was in part the reason for the post.

Cool video. Is it coincidence those blade types we're the top ones or is it the skill of the cutter that makes the most difference?

Cool video. Is it coincidence those blade types we're the top ones or is it the skill of the cutter that makes the most difference? The blade is less important than the knowledge and skills of the person using it. Each blade design requires a certain technique. If you understand that, then you can make good cuts with any kind of blade. Assuming a properly constructed blade, that is. I know two handed blades because that is what I've studied. I won't do well with one hand because I haven't studied them. However, this year I intend to concentrate on the single hand cut and see what I can do with that.

I do like the fact that a decent machete cuts almost as well as an Albion messer.
Of course in the right hands it cuts well. I noticed that the competitor cutting with it at the jean portion had to put a lot more effort and arcing into the cuts while the albion user almost had to do nothing.
Thank you for sharing!

It's that perfect storm of the blade's dynamics, the actual edge sharpness and the cutter's technique at any given moment. I've sparred with the pinuti guy myself. He's an Incredible fighter but I believe he spends a lot more time on the fighting than the test cutting (and runs his own school at that). So it's hard to judge the blades evenly based on the test cuts in the competition.
