Here's a Christmas thread for those of good cheer: photos, stories, recipes, videos, gifts, whatever. My wife's grandmother was Finnish and loved Christmas like no other. She always went all out with decorations, food, real candles on the tree, etc. She gave use this little ornament of Joulupukki, a Finnish Christmas figure, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joulupukki. He's often modernized to be a lot like Santa but comes from Norse lore. So, we gave him a little addition.

And a video because there's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for.

I like this one a bit better, despite the Christmas Spirit sacrilege:

These rules are reality in my family. It also conveniently explains why I can't never have swords as a gift ever...because of love of course. (Blunts are NOT excluded either from the rules because...hmmm...reasons ? xD)

Skating Away is a classic Merry Christmas A cousin and family recently saw the Petersons and were suitably impressed. It is nice to see the acoustic presentations they do, with mics only. God rest ye merry gentlemen indeed. Solstice bells are ringing.

I seem to recall in Japan it gifts of black and white were similarly not polite due to the connection with death and funeral rites.

Normally I like Christmas in the northern climes, but this year being what it is, spending Christmas on a sun drenched island sounds wonderful.

I think most are due to homonyms like the famous "Four is Death" thing in Chinese (and East Asians countries in general ?). Some are due to the use of the thing itself and associated idioms like "Look as (your) Time passes", "Cutting off (relations)", "Extinguish the candle (of your life)" etc... Or like giving perfume to someone, one could take it as "you stink". Maybe. xD Personnally, the explanation I tend the most is : "Don't worry, money is fine, really..."

So then should I be worried about that bottle of seasoning my wife gave me that says "Memento Mori" on the label? She won't touch it, says it's a special blend of flavors just for me. It's French I think.
