I recently got a Hanwei Practical Kung Fu Broadsword, the black Oxtail Dao / Niúwěidāo (New Why Dao ), not the brass one. The broad part of the blade before the tip has a very flat and thin diamond cross section. I had expected a triangular backsword cross section along the whole blade but this makes the forte really lightweight for a good handling. The false edge is so thin that I'm thinking of sharpening it like I usually do on sabers, curlass etc. I did some search but got no information except that other Chinese dao types had a false edge at the tip, sometimes sharp. Do oxtail sabers usually have such a diamond blade cross section there? If yes, were they sharp?

I have a background in Chinese martial arts, and while my background is mostly in performance, modern competitive forms are based in reality. There are a lot of moves that involve contact with the spine against your body, and if the false edge were sharp I could definitely see people hurting themselves. So while I do not know if the false edge was ever sharpened historically, my guess, based on the lineage of usage of that type of sword, is that the false edge would be left blunt.

Thank you for the informations! At least some yanmandao had sharpened back edges at the tip. www.mandarinmansion.com/article/geese-and-willowsThe www.mandarinmansion.com/item/early-form-niuweidao has an interesting spatular tip, a bit like on migration era or viking swords with a lenticular cross section and double edge. Ore they used a Worksharp?? On my dao the tip is extremely thin and arrived with a feelable (but not visible) rolled very tip. I'm also thinking of reinforcing this thin tip. Spatular tip is an option.
