To be honest I know basically zero about euro swords, but I've been skulking around on the euro sections of SBG for a while now I'm looking into buying my first euro sword, but after looking around I'm astounded at how many options there are! So basically my requirements are: It has to be a two-handed longsword or maybe a bastard sword? Simplicity - this is what attracted me to euro swords in the first place! Weight- I want a light blade, I know that its a myth that euro swords are heavy and bulky, but I'm looking for something at under 3 lbs. Price - Obviously I'd like it to be as affordable as possible International shipping - speaks for itself. Any suggestions?

Some years ago, there was a retailer of Del Tin swords (and others) named Men At Arms. The current trail leads to a rather cheesy looking website with some swords but the good ones look few and far between. www.swords.co.za/index2.phpThey may be able to order for you from other sources, or may indeed have a real presence/store in Cape Town where they might offer more than what is on the site. On the other hand, there is Nostro Titus, who has a page www.nostro-swords.co.za/ He makes very nice stuff and might be worth your while checking out. he is advertising a munitions grade single hander for what works out to be about $160 US, which is astounding. He could probably do up a simple longsword for a quite reasonable price. He has posted on some of the other boards over the years and is not some unknown. I know shipping from abroad adds up but you might also consider ordering directly from Del Tin, in Italy. www.deltin.net/home.htm Although, he does not ship sharps. The 5157 and 5155 are very handy longswords. I own a 5157 and it is just a bit more than three pounds but 51 inches overall. The smaller 5155 must be just under three. Honestly, I'd check out Nostro and see what he can do for you. His site is a fun browse. Cheers Hotspur; the first link was the one that came up quickly for in country retailers but there are probably some more

I too am interested in buying my very first Euro sword as well. I also know absolutely zero about modern Euro swords so i'm going to benefit from any suggestions along with Speaktree.
Not trying to hijack your thread Speaktree, just didn't think we'd need 2 of the same exact threads going.
I would like to aim for the target price on the forum.... $300

Hehe it seems the euro bug has is contagious! Thanks for the info so far guys! I'm aware of nostro titus and swords.co.za. Nostro swords moight be the better option here as you said, although I wouldn't ask him to make a katana, he seems to be quite a specialist on the western front

I would go with an old atrim here: www.leesarmoury.com/at.htmif the price point is 300. If lower, im always first to suggest the Windlass: Sword of Auray. Its still available in a few places.

There is always the valiant practical line. Very good for the money. I really did like how Razor's longsword felt. And it's under 3 lbs.

From where I stand the VA ATs look like the best bet. I especially like that they can be dismantled and personalised to taste.

I agree with the VA's. I think they are, dynamics wise, the most accurate in our market.

So would you say the VA's swords are good entry level swords? I think thats what i'm in need of, but then again, i don't want anything that is too cheap. I would like something that could be compared to cheness in the Japanese sword world, only applying it to the Euro community.

VA's sword's in general are not very well respected. The VA atrim models (based with permission on the swords made by the famous angus trim, maker of very good swords) have gotten great reviews, though. Better than probably almost all sub 300 swords. So the Va ATs good, but I can't really recommend anything else from the maker.
You could also try some of kris cutlery's euro line, ricwilly has raved about those and he's got pretty good experience from low end to high end, so he has a reference point on which to judge - so you'd do well with those.

For what it's worth, I agree with Rammstein. The VA Practical Line are good swords. Not perfect, but correctable to almost be a real ATrim. I thnk of them as sort of a "junior version." And for a little over half the price, they are a good deal.
And I am willing to bet that the Hanwei swords that are designed by Tinker Pierce will be just about fabulous.
However, don't discount some of the nicer surprises in the lower-priced lines like MRL's Windlass-made ULFBERHT. It's a very nice handling sword for $150-175. If I lost or gave mine away, I would immediately replace it with another of the same type.
I'm sure the same goes for a couple of others. For instance, the MRL "Type IV" that's really an Oakeshott Type XIV. And I've been wondering about the MRL Naumberg Sword. It looks like a nice one too.

Speaktree I don't mean to over step and I have no idea how the shipping will be to SA. For a bit more ($375), there is this; www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=13925Someone please buy this before I lose my self control. I'm having a hard time thinking of reasons not to.
