This video may be of interest to those wondering how medieval soldiers obtained their kit. I’ve seen the question raised on the forum in the past and perhaps this will help.

web.archive.org/web/20110522064216/http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/medievalprices.html#WAGESNote: It was mandatory in England for all freemen to own certain types of weapons and armor. (In 1181, every freeman having goods worth 10 marks (1 mark = 13s 4d) had to have a mail shirt, a helmet, and a spear. All other freemen should have helmet, spear, and gambeson (quilted armor) [4], p. 39.) Later, the government stored arms and armour in churches for use; in the 13th century anyone with an income of L2-L5 (wealthy peasants) had to have bows; archery practice became compulsory on Sundays and holidays. You may know that the extreme range of the longbow was 400 yards, but did you know that a statute of Henry VIII no one over 24 could practice at a range of less than 220 yards? (See [4], p. 95 and elsewhere).www.british-history.ac.uk/There are similar resources for every country. In my continued opinion, reducing the understanding to a 15 minute video (a good portion of that commercial and irrelevant) equates to a fast food drive in+out level of education. I suppose that suits some but the problems that arise in apparent retained knowledge boils down to how quick one can find a wiki, or even search for one. Half truths and recollection via videos are the only real growth I see on a lot of boards as newcomers come along. From a gamers perspective, the video is excellent. Cheers GC

I don’t think anyone seriously interested in armour and weapons would settle for the video. It does however give a quick over view on how such could have been obtained. What was required is another story. Both are too complex to be briefly explained and volumes have been written concerning the time and place of each. The video does give a quick over view on how one obtained such and should answer some questions.

I'll have to watch the video later. Thanks for sharing. I will say that it it kind of bothers me when I see many people on Facebook tell another poster that one item of their kit doesn't match or go well with another. I'm like, "well, yeah, because half my kit is looted from after the battle!" One of my favorite perceived parts of medieval warefare--getting free upgrades off the fallen foes who won't need it anymore. Maybe there will be a dead king somewhere, and I'll get something positively regal!

It was a great honor to kill a famous hero and wear his armor on the battlefield later on. The armor won in battle was a calling card for the warrior.
