as the title suggests I'm thinking of trying out small blade forging ....... bad thing is I live in an apartment so no large fire ...... good thing is I have a balcony suitable for a grill so a small forge with minimal external heat out put (about as much as a large gas grill) will not burn down my place ;D I hope ..... so I'm calling on all of you with more experience than me ...... for help ...... safety, tools, forge, materials, books, DVDs, websites .......

In fact, to anyone interested, that list of links I posted will get you entirely started in the world of bladesmithing, with a set of files and some sandpaper you will have a complete setup.
total, 1,195$

well I'm not going to tell you that you cant. but for your sake please don't do it on your balcony. find a place to work. if your gunna do a twist pattern you need an anchored vise. when you put the red hot steel into it your going to have the also red hot scale come cracking off and if I'm right in assuming that the balcony is made of wood your not going to be doing it any favors.

maybe I've been a tadd un-clear about my little blade making adventure ....... I'm not looking to make swords, daggers, or even fixed blades I want to make things like this that has a five inch blade that has a three and a quarter inch blade the biggest blade I'm looking to forge is only going to be six or seven inches

Folders are a lot harder indeed. "Custom Knifemaking" by Tim Mc'Creight has two designs and step by step how-tos for folding knives. You should read that.
