For those of us who will be playing this game or just want to talk about it, I made a thread. Here are some screenshots way too big to upload here. imgur.com/gallery/e6d3Lzi

Let us know if it's fun. Odyssey was a good time, if repetitive. I'll be chewing through the Beyond Light for a while so this'll be a next year game for me.

I haven’t played as much as I thought I would have because I’ve got school work and a major cold, but it seems better than Odyssey so far. I liked Odyssey, but Valhalla feels way more grounded, with no regenerating health after combat (you have to eat food to heal) and combat stamina makes combat more tactical and less robotic.

Well, it looks like it's literally just Vikings: The Video Game, but hey, maybe that's not a bad thing. Might give it a try when it comes out on PC.

Education can be a double edged sword for some people. Unfortunately, I am unable to not see all of the ridiculous "barbarian" tropes and anachronisms in entertainment media like this game and the Vikings TV show. They just grind their eyeliner, cornrow braids, gratuitous fur, and ridiculous weapons and armor (or lack thereof) into my poor eyeballs. I...just...can't.
For those of you who can, I'm happy for you.
No, really...I totally am.

My real biggest issue with the Assassin's Creed games is not loving the way their combat feels. J'adore From Soft's SoulsBorne games, because they have found the perfect balance of difficulty, necessary character progression, and necessary player skill progression for my tastes. Unfortunately, everything else, even vaguely, under the Action RPG umbrella gets directly compared to SoulsBorne, and are almost always found lacking to a greater or lesser degree. Any other marks against this game come from Ubisoft being run by terrible people (blah, blah, but...but, what about EA/Activision/2K?!!!), and the 'Vikings' aesthetic, which is just a bridge too far for me.

What fun is a game where i have to play the first ten minutes again and again and again and still be killed by some lousy undead? I want to RELAX with video games - not continue hardcore PC work at home! I have enough of that at work every day... O.o Witcher III is still the perfect balanced game for me; i also liked Skyrim a lot. The AC's are quite repetitive by now; get boring quickly.

I want to RELAX with video games - not continue hardcore PC work at home! I have enough of that at work every day... O.o Witcher III is still the perfect balanced game for me; i also liked Skyrim a lot. The AC's are quite repetitive by now; get boring quickly. The difficulty of the Souls game is a core element to them. The games train you, as the player, to get better at playing the game. You can literally beat the entire game with a starting character using their bare hands (it tedious, but it's been done by many people). The difficulty is front-loaded (meaning that adjusting to what is expected of you as a player is crammed into the beginning of the game play), and you are just dropped into the deep end of the swimming pool with the expectation that you will figure out how to swim, or (metaphorically) drown. Once you grasp what is really expected of you, when the game mechanics finally click, it all becomes much easier...but not easy. The souls games are about the satisfaction of achieving something difficult, and persevering through adversity. The anxiety experienced when fighting a difficult boss enemy is rewarded with the endorphin rush you experience when you finally defeat it. ...but for me the best part of the Souls games is the lore and world building. It's so creatively portioned out to you in often obtuse NPC dialog, and item descriptions, but they always end up painting a complex tapestry of dark fantasy. These bleak settings speak to me on a primal level (the void calls to me). Essentially, the Souls games are similar to the AC games superficially, but almost the polar opposite when it comes to games play, setting, and storytelling. It's these differences which really turned me away from the AC games (and I have repeatedly tried to get into them). There's nothing wrong with liking the Assassin's Creed games, they just aren't for me.
