Anyone who graduated from the Academy gets my respect bigtime automatically. That's no trivial accomplishment.

A portrait of an officer is Mr. Gandy. Obviously very belated but congrats on that accomplishment and I'm sure many others followed that milestone.

I served myself. But I didn't do as well as you guys did. Army. Two-year enlistment, got out just before Desert Shield. But just before my enlistment ended, I told my CO he was full of sh**.
He didn't like that much. He justifiably booted me out with a "general under honorable conditions" discharge. At the time I was relieved. But now I regret it.
A few months later, my unit shipped out to Kuwait, where some of my buddies got "Gulf War Syndrome". Our MOS was bridging rivers - aka combat engineer. But there's not many rivers to bridge in Kuwait, so my unit ended up digging up landmines and/or blowing them up.
I guess I should be happy, I survived. But I do wish I'd done it different. 2nd biggest regret of my life.

If any of my troops told me I was full of sh** I would be glad they called me on it. Sounds like it should have been handled better.

I wish I'd handled it differently. It was my failure, not my CO's. I was just a kid. If I'd shut up, I would've been fine. But I'm not good at shutting up - in fact I'm notorious for calling BS.
I'm older now, I understand it better. If I'd phrased things differently, let my CO know what was going on, he would've understood. He would've fixed it. But I didn't phrase it that way, instead I phrased it as "this is all just BS". He needed details, but I was too immature to provide them.
Anyway I'm alive now (unlike some of my buddies) and I'm leading a good life. So I have no complaints.

Have you considered applying for an upgrade in your discharge status? All they can do is say no. Regardless, you served so Happy Veteran's Day!

Thanks for the kind words. No, I don't need a discharge upgrade. I have my own benefits. Retirement is mapped out, and that's just a few years away.
Happy Veteran's Day!
