A great book to start with is "Tools and Toolmaking" by David Harries and Bernhard Heer. It covers the very basics of blacksmithing, toolmaking, and has a good basic knifemaking tutorial for the beginner.
Another great book, that covers a varying selection of skills is "Custom knifemaking" by Tim Mc'Creight. This is a truly excellent book, that covers many many subjects. Superb for the beginner. Eveything is explained.
Another book I can recommend is "The Complete bladesmith" by Jim Hrisoulas. This covers more diverse blademaking techniques, such as swordsmithing and pattern welding. Superb.
