Recently there were 3 Japanese swordsmanship students visited us to test cut with their private swords on our realistic targets. I put the videos together for viewing pleasure. In the video there were times I tested their swords on the targets, as well as using my Lily Maru to finish the thigh roll. Being a JSA student is no guarantee of success. A novice/unranked JSA student is little different than a kid off the street. What JSA are these kids studying and how are all three of these JSA kids ranked? It does "make a difference". I suspect they are unranked and would be surprised if any were ranked even Shodan. The first two will have decent technique as they train as long as they dont keep doing this away from their dojo/sensei; they have been taught proper stance and posture for the cut...most noticeably evident in that they do NOT dip their shoulders deeply or "bat" at the target with the sword. The third kid in blue... dipping shoulder and batting at target (as evidenced by knocking over the stand). I am curious how you make your targets and how they compare to traditional tatami mats? I am not sure how 'appropriate" wet newspapers rolled loosely around apparently random shaped PVC piping (?) are as training targets. PVC is certainly no replacement for bamboo as a hard target and I am not familiar enough with its impact / density qualities to know for sure. It is very important as you train /learn that every target be as identical as possible so that the only significant variables are the students technique or lack thereof. Final question, did their sensei know they were there doing that? Training outside the dojo, without proper etiquette, dress and equipment?

Very good! I like seeing realistic cutting, and also cutting from different practitioners and styles. It's a learning event for everybody.
But more importantly, I really like the belt/bag combo the student in the blue shirt is wearing. Please tell me more about it! Love it!

They can throw in huge amount of tools in that bag.

Seems like the best combination for a modern swordsman- carry your blade and cell phone too!

I asked him for you and he said it was custom made by his friend, thus there's no place that sells it.

Yah, figures it's a custom. That would explain why I have never seen one before. I'll just have to make one for myself. Love the idea behind it!
