Hello members/readers, Can anyone can give me some information about the age and origin of this sword or rapier? I picked it up at an auction in The Netherlands it was sold as "old sword" without any information. I looked online at "basked-hilted rapiers" and found one with a similar design: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-d-basket-hilt-backsword-paul-1886090761Howerever I felt mine looks hand forged and considerably older. I would be happy with any information about the sword and I'm looking forward for your opinions. Thanks a lot!

Welcome aboard. These are Mensur fencing swords. Any markings might be helpful but these are plentiful and were made for about a century. I have a catalog page somewhere that will show some similar types. If you do some searching, there is plenty to read about. Cheers GC en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_fencingAttachments:

Thank you very much, that is very helpful information. I can find a lot of good sources online now, with the right search terms. There are no markings anymore , it's in a pretty rough shape given the fact is from the early 20th century. I must say this mensur fencing is historically fascinating, what a brutal kind of sport. Thanks!
