I have what I believe is a pre 1889 Prussian Officer Sword. The handle has been replace with wood and the blade has ben remounted upside down. How do I remove the pommel and hilt to fix this?

Hi.
Try to turn the knob on the pommel. Maybe get a little penetrating oil in there first. Put the blade in a vise, as close to the guard plates as possible. Go easy with the force. You do not want to break the threaded tang end as that end is quite slender. If that doesn't work try to heat the knob and than try to turn. A good tap on the knob with a hammer may loosen the knob a bit. Be advised to tap on a little piece of wood held on the knob with one hand before you hit. Do not want to damage the brass. The grip may be genuine. Just the old wire broken and removed. Look at images from google images to see what it looked like before if you want to replace the wire. Hope this will help you out a bit.
Cheers.
