Hi everyone...I'm trying to determine the value of a collection of swords I acquired from my late father. If anyone out there is a collector in the Chicago area, or knows of one who doesn't charge outrageous fees, I could really use your help. My father bought these swords over the years at garage sales and flea markets, but even so, a high end appraiser here in Chicago told me the collection could probably bring about $3000. He wanted $895 to put a price on each sword. I don't mind paying for an appraisal, but obviously I wasn't about to put out that kind of money, so I don't know which ones are valuable and which aren't. I have pictures I could email to any knowledgeable, honest person who's interested. Thanks guys....ssmom99

Any reputeable antique arms dealer should give you an appraisel for free or a minor fee, assuming you could provide said blades or their relevant specifics ! Why would you want to pay him 895 if he thinks they're only worth 3 grand ??! Please if I may ask, photo both sides of the entire blades and take close ups of any specific details (i.e signatures or any intentional symbology engravings ). This would help us all immensely .

I am posting the photos for ssmom99. I'm inserting the photo name beside each thumbnail. Click on the thumbnail to view a (quite large format) image. She can then describe what kind of feedback she's looking for. P9240001 P9240002 P9240003 P9240004 P9240005 P9240006 P9240007 P9240011 P9240013 P9240014 P9240015 P9240016 P9240017 P9240018 P9240019 I did not post every picture, but selected what I thought were the clearest pictures that show all the swords. ssmom99, please feel free to point out any pictures that you think should be added. Thanks to everyone for your help.

ok lets see if I can help here.
the first one in the sescond column is almost certainly italian, I'd say 16th to early 17th centuries.
Second one on the thrid column (the bottom sword) looks indian to me, possibly a tulwar. Not sure what century, I'll look into it.
Bad news though: The 3rd pictures, second column, sword with the large, curving crossguard is fake. It is a reproduction of el tisona, el cid's sword. Even if that was real, I'd doubt that you'd gotten it from spain, since the original one is there, I believe ;D. Anyway, the real cid "probably" wouldn't engrave his name and the sword's name on the blade.
Sorry I can;t be of much more help, but if the rest are original's I certainly wouldn't hesitiate to put a price on them over far over 3k. More like 6k...7k...8k. And you'd still probably get buyers drooling over them (in the sword community.)

Hi guys...Thanks for the feedback and thanks to Mike for posting the pics. I figure if I can get an idea of what the swords are and approximate value, then I can take them to a dealer and not be taken advantage of. I did find out the Knights of Columbus swords are only worth about $60, right? As I mentioned in my original message, I live in suburban Chicago, so if anyone knows a good dealer or appraiser around here, please let me know. Of course if any of you are interested in a particular sword...so much the better! Thanks again!
