If anything happens to any of you other west coast folks...I call dibs on your swords! Seriously, I hope everyone is OK. These forest fires are horrible and many (not all) of them are an example of what happens when Federal and state government abandon prudent management practices.

I'm not near the fires directly as they are south of me, however the smoke and air quality is pretty awful right now.

Fact: the smoke arrives in Germany/Europe! Good thing we are all wearing masks... Unfortunately, in my experience, masks tend to trap the smoke (or fumes) and make it harder to breathe. I do know it was a joke btw.

Thanks Paul...I guess it depends on how many and what kind of masks you have. ...here are some photos from October 2017 when I was evacuating my horse and others horses from a local wildfire near the barn I keep the horse at...while I stopped one rank short of Eagle Scout ( one of my big regrets in life) I did take to heart the motto "be prepared".

Would you kindly not politicize this thread? I started the thread with the purest of intentions: to allow a space for people from this region to check in and let us know they are okay. LordNewport, please stop. Just wondering, ye of the purest intentions, if they're not OK how are you going to help? Send money? Arrange hotel rooms? Have them come stay with you maybe? Or Just wring your hands and offer platitudes maybe?

Or Just ring your hands and offer platitudes maybe? You are a colossal jackass. And you have no sense of humor. I deleted the joke you considered "politicization" as you can see. You refused to delete your request in response. Maybe I'm wrong, do you donate money to the American red cross or will you donate money earmarked for fire victims? I'm just wondering how really concerned you are, asking for a friend. Just to make the point and issue a challenge, I will donate $250 to the American Red Cross Wildfire relief fund when I return home this evening. I encourage all concerned people to do the same.

Yes, those are respirator masks with organic filters. They will keep fumes from getting to your lungs. I wear one when I’m painting with kilz or a similar product inside. For the pandemic people are wearing cloth and paper masks which are not good for smoke or other type of fumes. So when you said “Its a good thing we’re all wearing masks”, it was very misleading. Again I know it was a joke. And while in the Boy Scouts for only one year, I too took the motto to heart. And it has served me well over the years. Mostly. 😏

A joke none the less. I have a number of US military gas masks, even a couple MOPP suits..."just in case". The gas masks helped me continue to evacuate horses even as the fire got into close proximity of barns and the heat and smoke were too intense for unprotected rescue folks.

Gas masks are good for the smoke. And just FYI for all of you , painter’s masks are good also. Just make sure you put in the organic filters and not just the dust filters. You can put the dust filters over the organic filters. These type of masks can be purchased at paint stores and home improvement stores. Hope all of you out there stay safe.
