Hello, I wonder if someone can shed some light on the dates Schmolz manufactured swords in Solingen. The sabre below: is on face value a first empire light cavalry sabre which has the mark of 'Schmolz; at the heel of the blade. Can anybody say that he was manufacturing at the turn of the XIX century? I have L'Hoste open but no reference to Schmolz. Thanks

Richard Bezdek listed W(ilhelm) Schmolz & Co. from 1813-1861 and W.Schmolz & Sohn from 1861-1950. So, I would (we could) figure marking before & Co. would predate 1813. Blade blue&gilt decorations are another way to roughly date blades. So, if you can, share the rest of the blade decoration. Particularly the end of the decorative portion. Also out of curiosity if there is a mark on the spine of the blade. A flourish of squiglies or flower? Older blades often end the b&g straight across, or angled in a point. www.amazon.com/German-Swords-Sword-Makers-Centuries/dp/1581600577Bezdek goes on to mention the company had export trade with Sweden. Oh also, Napoleon controlled much of Prussia for about a year before the treaty of Tilsit, summer of 1807 and controlled the Rhineland until 1814 . Cheers GC

Hi edelweiss, this is a great help thanks. I could find a Schmolz mid XIX century but nothing for first empire so you really are digging here. Here are the images of the blued area of the blade. There is a cartouche (very Egyptian) on one side.

Thanks for the additional photos. In my opinion, very much 1st Empire.
I am not terribly studied on these older German blades but I have read the spine marks and flowers on the blades relate to specific forges. The oak leaf is a new one to me on a blade but common to decoration on ferrules and acorn finial. The Sun common both to monarchy and seen on many blades.
A beautiful sword, thanks for sharing.
Cheers GC

Hey edelweiss, I have both L'hoste books but I could not pin it down. Your insight is really facinating and need to save up for that Richard Bezdek BOOK. Thank you for your interest also.

One of the photos shows vice drag marks from the peening or peen tightening process, How's it look?

I would be surprised if this was original to when it was assembled for the first time. The mark has some age to it though, so perhaps it's just a gouge from needing to be tightened.

When you enlarge the image enough it almost looks like a delamination/flake. Note the spine past that point. It is apparent on both sides though and the spine shot squished.

Man that is a beautiful piece. Sorry, I wish I had more to add like others here, but just had to show some admiration.

Here are some more images showing the full sabre and the ribs of mellon pommel. It should arrive this weekend. I am very excited and very skint now!! I have not bought the Bezdek book yet so Schmolz is a little elusive in the information available.
