***** This is a work in progress, and may take a while to complete *****
For the moment, the purpose of this text is mostly to serve as a place-holder. I offer my apologies for subjecting you guys to piecemeal prose. I don't have a way of creating the Table of Measurements before uploading, so I created it here in this post. While I appreciate that the SBG site supports the creation of such a table, creating it is a bit tedious and difficult to edit. To save my progress, I had to post it for all to see.
The general purpose of this post will be to present a casual comparison of four sabers I am pleased to own: a first generation French m1822 light cav trooper saber and three "Solingen clones," often labelled as "US m1840 heavy cav sabers," or simply "Wristbreakers." I dunno if I'll get into why such a label might be egregiously incorrect. I only mention it now because I used it in the table. "Unlicensed copy of French m1822 made by Solingen company X for export and possibly used in the US as a cavalry saber that was close enough to the US m1840 to be issued to troops as such during wartime" is just too cumbersome.
I may also get into a bit of the history of how Prussians came to be exporting French intellectual property. However, being a casual enthusiast, my knowledge is based almost entirely on information gleaned from the internet. So anything I might write would be 1) inherently unreliable; and 2) freely available from the original source. I guess we'll see.
I intend to present a few comparison photos as well.
Anyway, I hope the finished product will have some value to the community. It may be a few days until I can get it all together.
In the meantime, please enjoy the only solidly reliable and personally researched information I'm likely to actually provide: measurements.
