Spanish American artillery foot soldiers short sword? From my limited resource that’s what I think that I have, there are very few resources available for this particular weapon as far as I can initially see, so it’s time to ask the experts. I have the sword the sheets and the frog it appears to be in good overall condition with some minor pitting in rusting on the blade very minor. The edge itself does not seem to be sharpened, and allegedly there is a photograph of the gentleman who owned the sword I’m working on that. There was a reference to the Spanish American war by the family. they feel like the gentleman whom I bought it from, his father , Or a grandfather was in the Spanish American war. There was even some discussion about San Juan Hill I cannot verify any of this as of yet. There is a true etched onto the blade shown in the photograph other than that I do not see any markings on the sword at all. Please let me know what I have boys and thank you in advance for your insight

I don't think the frog is old, or proper for the sword. There is a thread I have in mind and I can't place it but first half of the 19th century (1840s iirc) and subsequent similar models.
Cheers GC

Also looks like the “2” might be a “27”. Was this a Spanish weapon or American?

Cheers GC I'm pretty sure I shared as much as I was able to. On the other hand, you've (once again) not bothered to offer dimensions or simple photos of the overall sword (outside of the scabbard). If I was going to play snooty, I would post that answers are $1. Correct answers are $2. Dumb looks continue to be completely free. Cheers GC If I stumble upon the info, I'll post it.

Thanks I've posted a couple of images to a facebook group and it might get some nibbles. If you are on facebook, join this group. International Antique Sword Collectors www.facebook.com/groups/iascpostCheers GC Fwiw, no one knows it all but many have been around the block and might have info. Choosing SBG alone as a venue kind of limits the scope of expertise out there.

You’re the man. I’m not on Facebook, but I’ll look for other forums. Thanks again. If you ever get to Boston just yell “Matt” real loud. I’ll come find you and buy you a drink...

I spent a lot of time in and around Boston. I moved south to RI in 2013.

Oh, I figured you were from over seas. Now that I think of it, I don’t know why, I guess the name and your frequent sign off “cheers”. I looked on a couple other sites, tough to navigate. I see you on there as well. Thanks again and let me know if you come across anything. I’m going to try and get provenance going on my end.

I also post around as horseclover, Hotspur, Bombadil and a few others. Yes, old sites on mobile can be a hurdle. I posted a couple of pictures at the Ethnographic Forum from the Viking Sword site and will get around to a couple of others, such as myArmoury (Glen A Cleeton) and Sword Forum International (Glen C.). The facebook group sees many that travel in the same circles, so cross your fingers. One other old fart (Hal Siegel Therion Arms) has actually posted here years ago and answered yesterday on fb that he has one of these and has no idea what it is. He somewhat specializes and collects short swords of the 19th century. I returned to SBG after being shouted down here some years ago and you will find the member posts here as hotspur from years ago. Edelweiss a nod to some of my ancestors (Beck) with the avatar change this year and the flower will return in time. The eagle crescent is an early South Carolina dragoon's hat plate. Cheers GC An edit to note that it is now posted at SFI, myArmoury, Blade Forums, the aforementioned Viking Sword and facebook. So, six venues. These things sometimes take time.

Just that quick from Mark Cloke of Old Swords "From Espados Espanolas by Vincente Toledo Momparler. A good book for Spanish ID's." Cheers GC
