This is my one and only japanese blade, it is a shinsakuto Akamatsu Taro Kanesada.
Although it isn't the greatest blade ever it is great for its price.
It is rather long for me, but given that I do not use it I makes for a perfect part of my humble collection.
<Swordsmith and sword feature>
"Higo Ju Kanesada 肥後住兼定", real name"Kimura Kanesada 木村兼定", was the early name of current " (Higo Ju) AkamatsuTaro Kanetsugu 肥後住赤松太郎兼嗣" who are also known as an eldest of famous "AkamatsuTaro 赤松太郎" brothers.
He learned under his swordsmith father "Kaneshige 兼重".
The Kimura was a swordsmith family retained by the Sagara uji family of former Hitoyoshi clan and Kanetsugu(Kanesada) has been bringing all the members of AkamatsuTaro Kimura together.
This sword was made in Kanesada's early days, he used their own Tamahagane made of sand iron from Sendai river which contributed to unique base steel color - clearly different from swords made of NBTHK Tamahagane.
New polishing 研ぎ was completed just before we uploaded this sword to our Japanese web site.
We also had Tsuka- maki 柄巻き re-wrapped with black leather for immediate Tameshigiri use.
<Appearance>
It has an ordinary blade weight and a width, Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. The curve is Toriizori style and the blade top is Komine.
<Hada - Forging>
The jihada (body of the sword) is a tightly forged Koitame 小板目肌 which looks "wet/ moist - Uruoi 潤い", and coarse Jinie(darkish crystal)granule attaches abundantly on the surface.
<Hamon - Temper patterns>
The Hamon is Gunome with rich Sunagashi activities and Ginsuji(whitish silver line) shows up along the cutting edge. Kinsuji(golden line) runs through along the temper line.
Boshi- temper line of the tip is goes into Sugu and turns back to a gentle curl called Komaru.
<Nakago - Tang>
The Tang is Ubu(original). Nakago end is Kurijiri shape.
<Habaki-Metal collar>
Two layers of gold gilded silver Habaki.
