Hi! I am doing research on this Japanese sword and I need some help identifying it. I think it may be a Katana or a Tachi. I haven't checked the tang of the blade to look at the signature, and I know that doing so would help me to narrow it down quite a bit. I'm really apprehensive about taking the sword apart which is why I haven't. The length of the blade is 28.5 inches or 73 cm, which fits within the average length for both types of swords. The handle is 10 inches or 25.5 cm. A friend translated the inscription on the top of the blade to say "Mori Kaneo", which I think is a person's name, but I could be wrong. I have quite a bit of information gathered on Japanese swords that I'm working applying to this one, but I need help. Any additional information that anyone can give is appreciated immensely. It's a really beautiful sword and I'd love to know more about it. Thank you so much! Attachments:

It is a fake Chinese made sword. Not Japanese.

Welcome to the forum! This is nowhere near the worst I've seen, but yes, it's a cheap Chinese approximation of a Japanese tachi. Now, it's "fake" only if someone tries to sell it as a real Japanese sword, but it is a modern, low quality decorative piece, likely produced for the tourist market, with no real monetary or functional value. If you like the look of it, great! Hang it on your wall, it's perfectly good for that. If you'd like to use it, don't! It's not built for that and may or may not randomly fall apart when swung, with the blade flying off in a random direction. If you want to sell it, asking more than $50 would be ripping people off. PS. Major diagnostic signs include the copious and intricate but sloppily executed decoration, imprecise geometry (particularly the washed out yokote), rough and drastically overetched "folded steel" pattern, etc. PPS. Incidentally, you can see examples of somewhat higher quality (though still decidedly towards the affordable end of the spectrum) reproductions in a similar style in this recent thread: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/61753/hero-sword-201liche-longquan-tachi

Hello, I've been trying to find help identifying this sword is anybody willing to help it will be greatly appreciated. Backstory I found this sword at a gun show where the guy claimed he bought it from an estate sale. I tried to figure out if it was a ww2 bring-back but couldn't find anything. So, unusual I took a gamble and bought which wasn't much money which is kinda scary because most real swords are very expensive. The sword isn't in the best of shape but thought it would be nice in my collection. I have pictures below if you want to contact me on my email to help me on Dschewy2000@gmail.com thank you!
