Have you ever noticed that people that are generally stupid with swords never get hurt?
The people that typically will check for cracks in a handle or will inspect fittings for defects will always be the ones to get hurt. Why do you think that is?
Do you think the stupids' just got lucky?

I've witnessed a fair few people doing silly things with their swords yet never gotten hurt by doing so. I've also never witnessed anyone getting hurt by doing anything with a sword at all, but still.. I'd say that you're right in saying that the stupids' got lucky. Same with the infamous beginners luck, heheh.

Do you think the stupids' just got lucky? Sal Sal, are you dyslexic ? You seem to have it the wrong way round mate: "Have you ever noticed that people that are generally stupid with swords always seem to get hurt? The people that typically will check for cracks in a handle or will inspect fittings for defects will mostly be the ones who don't get hurt. Why do you think that is? " Common sense prevails on this one buddy. Trust me . I have never been self-injured and I am fastidious by character ;D.

I'm thinking we don't hear about the stupid ones getting hurt because they bleed out too fast.

Solution? Be extra careful. I do not look too careful when practicing, but when I expect a blade, I use a clamp, thick gloves and am as delicate as possible.
My reason for not being too careful is that I am confident enough to use a sharp sword for forms because in my opinion, that is how it should be. I am not practicing to use a wooden stick or an aluminum blade.
When you say stupid what do you refer to?

Kinda sorta. I do know that know matter what you say most stupid people want to grab the blade...
I had my friend over to look at a really nice kill bill katana my sister got me for Christmas, (I'll try to do pics soon, the thing is awesome) and I told my friend, "Look man, this is more or less the real deal unlike my stainless steel wallhangers, so please don't thumb the blade or get you hands all over it. (He had just eaten a while ago and his hands were slightly greasy) He says "yea yea yea" I turn around for three seconds to grab something, turn back and he is there holding the sword by the blade and about to thumb the edge. I tell him he would probably slice his thumb open and take it back. And then wipe and oil it... again. Argh.

Same thing happened with me all the time, god it is annoying, people always HAVE to touch the blade, even when you make it clear. I swear, I stopped my same friend from touching the blade any further like 5 times now. I don't even allow him in my house anymore, as he sliced my couch with my sword. Thank god he didn't do a lot of damage, as the sword is too dull, if he did I probably would have kiled him.

Also, I think something that may confuse people don't really know what the blade is. Like if I say, "Don't touch the @#$% blade." They are probably thinking, "Don't touch the sharp side." No clue clue if my thoughts are correct, but the whole chunk o' metal coming out of the handle is the blade. Don't touch any part of it. But they are thinking blade= the edge. Bah. Have to educate everyone whenever they come near my swords. It's like seeing a sword makes them forget everything not happening at that second heh.

I'm thinking we don't hear about the stupid ones getting hurt because they bleed out too fast. Ahhh, if only . I think chopchop is right it is backwards, because plenty of stupid things being done (IE stabbing at things with a blade without a guard, or throwing swords at fenceposts) have caused much harm.

Yeah, i agree with the consensus here that the stupid or inexperienced people probably get hurt way more. The difference is that when you know that something you did was dumb your not going to broadcast it to the world, but rather keep it a secret so no one knows that you screwed up.
The reason it seems that careful or experienced users get hurt more is probably due to the fact that they are a bit more modest and honest. They realize the mistake made and try to spread the word so that fellow practitioners don't end up injuring themselves in the same way. To them there is no shame in making a mistake or being unlucky, its all a growing experience in The Way.

I think chopchop is right it is backwards, because plenty of stupid things being done (IE stabbing at things with a blade without a guard, or throwing swords at fenceposts) have caused much harm. If you're refering to what happened to me, it wasn't a stab. In fact, everyone seems to think that it was a stab that injured me, and I was just swinging it wildly, that pisses me off. I see careful practiconers get cut during maintenance and cut during noto and things such as that, when it does seem that stupid people (People that think a sword is a mystical thing and they slide there hands all over the blade. I'm sure you've all heard, "Is this sharp?", and then they cut themselves.) get cut worse, it seems that many of them, even through all the stupidity will generally get a few cuts and jump right back into the stupid thing they were doing. I mean, come on! I am not the only one that noticed what people on youtube are doing! Bad footwork, crappy form, bad edge alignment, exceptionally retarded things like "Sword baseball", and do you see those guys get badly injured? Not really, they just jump back into it.

I think we should all recall the infamous home shoppers channel mishap, where he slammed a wall hanger against the table and it flipped around and stabbed his arm.
not all stupids get lucky.

I think expierience also comes into play here, alot of people that buy and swing stupidly will probably have their fun and move on pretty quickl ... perhaps better explained the otherway. The type of person that will put their sword under the proverbial microscope, maintain it well etc etc are over time performing hundred or thousands of cuts more than the weekend ninja whos found a new hobby, and will find another hobby next week. That person is also more likely to be involved with the online sword community and report their mishaps, unlike the weekend ninja...
Less exposure time means less incidents, even if the incident ratio to exposure time is less for a 'professional'...
