Hi everybody, I have just joined the forum and I’m very happy to be here. I did originally put this on the beginners forum a few days ago. I’m also very excited as I just bought my first sword. I can not begin to tell you how excited I am to have a piece of living history in my home. I bought my first Napoleonic campaign book when I was 12 and I’m now 55. The sword I bought is a An XI, light cavalry sabre in very good condition, manufactured in klingenthal in April 1812. It has the poinçons of Krantz, Bick and Lobstein on the blade and also the hilt. All this I’m familiar with, however, I’m asking for someones help on something that I’m not familiar with. On the hilt, there is a further stamp, a number (47), I’ve attached a photo of the hilt and number. I’ve tried to research it myself but everything that I’ve found seems vague on what these numbers are. I’ve read that they are rack numbers or something to do with regiments. Are they just a way of counting and accounting merely for production reasons? Is there anyone who can shed some light on this please. Sorry about my ignorance. Paul Attachments:

Regimental and rack numbers are often made up out of a number of punches and form one long row of numbers and letters. The 47 is probably a part stamp or otherwise connected with production. A rack stamp 47 would one not do any good if one does not know where the rack is situated. Regiments could be stationed far apart all over the country. I have a Model An XI 1813 dated with an number 27 mark on both sword hilt and scabbard drag so would think they are another inspection mark.
