Hello, I have what purports to be a Japanese Officer's sword, but the more I dig into it, the more I think it's a fake/reproduction. One of the big signs to me is that the blade is plated, and the plating is coming off in places. I'm hoping someone here can confirm what I have, please see attached pictures. I had more pics, but since I'm no better with my camera than I am with sword ID, they are still in it. Thanks much!!! Thanks guys, very interesting! This sword belonged to a dear friend who passed away quite a few years ago now, and I finally got retired and got to looking into this. For better or worse I cleaned the edge up with my Ken Onion Worksharp, if only because I can't stand the thought of kicking off and having someone find a dull blade or a rusty gun amongst my stuff. I'm getting the impression that something like I have really has no definitive info on it, with only the backstrap design to really go on. So far I've seen "Chinese Parade Sword", "Japanese Officer's Sword" and now the Korean angle. And I thought Lee-Enfields were bad......

One of the big signs to me is that the blade is plated, and the plating is coming off in places. That's not suspicious. This particular style of gunto were dress swords, not intended for fighting, and the blades were often unsharpened and plated.

Welcome aboard The sword appears to be an early 20th century colonial occupation variety. This one possibly Korean occupation. These came in different grades of finish and many had machine made plated blades. I have a WWI period example with a Chinese Tsingtao/Quingdao territorial emblem. The ears on the grip of your's looks like the Korean flavor. Mine has an unplated blade and eel skin scabbard. scroll down here www.japaneseswordindex.com/military.htmClearer pictures and a visit to a site such as www.militaria.co.za/nmb/may get some more complete info. My example was kind of a stumble upon purchase. It has been remarked as a middle grade example and the Japanese occupation there was only a few years. Cheers GC
