Hello everyone, I'm Dave.
I've Just joined the SBG, and I thought I'd share this, the first sword in my collection. A custom 1796 light cavalry Sabre, made by Marco Danelli. I'd first seen the LCS when I was looking at the heavy cavalry version of the same year. It was love at first sight, & I thought I've got to have one.
I'd always liked swords, knives and daggers, and apart from an old fancy wall hanger sabre which I had when I was in my late teens, I'd never given much thought to actually owning a real sword in a serious way.
Once I'd been seduced by the 1796, the question was, were to get one. For a time I considered
an antique, and spent a while looking at this option. The problem was the very best condition examples were going for big money, and I had to weight this against saving up, and having the money ready, as these desirable sabres don't hang around for long.
I also wanted to use it for cutting, & althought some antiques in good enough condition can be used for this, they are still at least 200 years old, and there's bound to be something that's possibly corroded or worn that may not be visible at first, and could come loose or break in usage.
With that in mind, I began to look at the modern reproduction market, and what was on offer there. It was difficult, because there is so much information out there about different makers, and so much good and bad advice based on personal experiences, that I was at a loose end, and for a short while gave up the quest.
Some while later, I was watching videos on youtube, and someone recommended Danelli Armouries, so I gave them a look, and I liked what I saw. I sent an email, and it went from there.
The waiting list eventually ran to about 18 months, given that they were incredibly busy with many other orders, but this was ok as it allowed me some time to save up. It also gave me the opportunity to collect images of originals, and select certain features that I liked, & build up an idea of what I wanted, so I decided on a custom officer type. I collected the finished sabre in late October 2017.
I would highly recommend Danelli Armouries, their communication and updates with me were exceptional, and there were never any issues in regards to this. It was a first class service.
The sabre Specs are:
Overall length: 37 & 7/16 inches
Blade length: 32 & 7/8 inches.
Blade thickness: 8mm @ hilt, 5mm approx @ half point, 1.04mm @ tip.
Weight: 845 grams
POB: 7.5 inches
