What bladesmithing books can you guys recommend for making swords? I am mainly interested in longswords, shortswords and katana. I may make a knife or two here and there. If I even get to where I can make anything. I think that setting up a forge in my apartment would upset the landlord. >.>

Start with knives first, then try a sword.

Thanks for the advice. If I get to start smithing, I will heed it. Until then, will you recommend any books on those subjects?

You MUST start with knives. Very few people successfully make a go of making swords on their first go. Our very own Brenno is one such exception, but he is a genius with an angle grinder.
I recommend "Custom Knifemaking" by Tim Mc'Creight. A fantastic book. For information about swordmaking, try "The complete Bladesmith" by Jim Hrisoulas. For Japanese swordmaking, try "The craft of the Japanese Sword" by Yoshindo Yoshihara.
Good luck!

Thanks, guys. I will heed the advice and look for the books. I just hope that I get the ability to buy a house so that I can do this.
How much does it cost for the fuel source and steel material?

I recommend "The Pioneer Blacksmith". It is a great book and it tells you how to forge more than just knives.

When it comes to rail road spices, are they god for making knives? I think they look really good but do they hold an edge well or anything?

all depends on the heat treat and what kind of spike they are. last time i checked they were something like 1045-1050 carbon steel. they make a good knife but they are even better for practicing.
