Hi All, For *reasons* I gave away my Cold Steel Kopis Machete. I've seen lots of talk about machetes... (ya think? ) I want to get something one handed, thats as sword - like as possible, but I'm CHEAP. What I loved about the Kopis was the handle, it curved over the hand so if you were tired from swinging, it might stop you from tossing it randomly. Maybe the Cutlass machete? Thai Machete? Latin D- Guard? Thoughts?

The Cutlass machete is good and probably more nimble than the D-guard machete (I don't have one). I've read that the Thai machete can break at the thin blade guard transition. The Tactical Katana machete is a good light kat, easlily usable single handed. The Chinese Warsword machete is a big beast, turn it 180° and you'll have a mac bible chopper. But still usable one handed, Markus shortened the grip and likes it.

Had most of the CS machetes (not the Thai though). The Cutlass is the way to go, no doubt. Switch to hand-shake grip when you get tired, the pinky will lock into the knuckle bow.

I don’t have the CS Cutlass machete, not that I haven’t thought about it, but it’s so close to my 26” Latin style I was having trouble justifying the extra costs I’d be hit with. That has a good reputation and I’d say the way to go. You might take a look at Condor’s Naval Cutlass but I think the CS will handle more like a traditional machete and is cheaper. Having said that I can’t get the Condor out of my mind. But the CS would be the way to go. But then if one is good two is better, no?

Yup, one needs two cutlass machetes, one to file the tip and do other stupid things.

Yes, if you haven't sharpened it and fiddled with it, it's not yours...

If you want something sword like in their machete line, go for the Cold Steel Gladius. I have one and liked it so much I got one for my daughter's boyfriend for Christmas. Ask the members here, you'll see it's very popular and inexpensive.

Does it have to be Cold Steel? How about a Devil's Edge Qama or a Cobra Steel whatever-is-in-stock?

OK, I got my Cold Steel Cutlass machete. Wow very different. Very. The Kopis Machete was lighter, and shorter. This one is essentially a sharp piece of flat barstock. Very dead in the hand, but I have some bushes that have been looking at me funny. (more on that later) So I got it for 40.00, +free shipping. First impressions, crappy uneven edge grinding. Plenty sharp for a machete. Absolutely no distal tapir. Handle fits hand ok. Any fun tests I need to try on it?

The edge/bevel on mine was ok. Handshake grip or pommeling like a viking sword makes it less sluggish. Grip band with thickening in the middle of the grip helps too.

Hmmm, another interesting point. VERY stiff blade, thumping the handle gives almost no wobble.
