This is awesome news. I've been waiting for a comprehensive review. I do mirror Skal's concern about handle wrap and tang construction.

This is awesome news. I've been waiting for a comprehensive review. I do mirror Skal's concern about handle wrap and tang construction. The tang construction should be fine. The LK Chen website has photos of unhilted sword blades, and I haven't seen any that look problematic. The handle cores are pinned in place, and so are the disk pommels (there is a brass/bronze section under the top part of the grip wrap). When the shape of the guard would leave the wooden core exposed, they glue a small section of lacquered ray skin to show through in a more cosmetic manner. The Heavenly Horse dao I own has a grip scale construction, since the tang is more robust to accommodate the welded ring pommel. I've been messing around with the two LK Chen swords quite a bit since receiving them, and the cord wrap has yet to move or loosen. I probably will end up changing the handle wrapping on these swords at some point, but that will have more to do with my need to customize my weapons and not because they were deficient in some way.

Yeah, you see similar pommel construction on some seaxes. It holds up fine.
The loose overwrap on Skal’s sword would be annoying, but I haven’t had any issues with the overwrap on my Striking Eagle. The base wrap, which I think is the same as what is on the Flying Phoenix, is very tight on my example. I don’t anticipate it going anywhere unless I decide I want it to.
