I received this from Matt with KoA referring to Universal Swords and their steel. I know my M1902 of 1065 is holding its edge better than my P1796 with its EN9.
"Hi Paul,
I received a reply from Aarvind Chouhan this morning – he says that they now make everything with AISI 1065
Thanks, -Matt"
This should make the PoW a great buy, but think I'll stick with the one that I have as I am not that keen on cavalry sabres. However, it is tempting to order another P1796 Sergeants Sword.

I had thought of that. The sword I want has been listed at 1055 for some months. I would have ordered this month but due to the virus and the number of approvals and the distances I need to travel tells me to wait. And I’m glad that I did because my dog needs an operation, scheduled for this coming Monday. He’s old with 15 years and probably hasn’t much longer to go and from that standpoint I feel that I’m wasting my money. On the other hand if I bought the sword I would never enjoy it feeling that I traded my dog for the sword. So it goes, that's life. As for the P1796 they have never been out of stock so I assume for the moment what KoA has is of EN9 and that in itself tells me to wait.

I don't think the steel makes a difference. If they can't heat treat EN9 properly why should they be able to do it with 1065?

Quite possible however my M1902 sabre of 1065 steel holds its edge better than my P1796 of EN9 so I'm willing to give it another shot. I have reason to believe that Windlass' M1840 NCO sword also of 1065 is harder than the M1902. I just checked since starting this and my tester has left Miami and should be somewhere over the Caribbean. Maybe, and that'a a maybe, I'll have it sometime next week. It is not of industrial quality but should give a rough idea of what's what.

You are NEVER wasting your money providing care and easing the suffering of any living creature, particularly one you love and loves you. Your dog is far more important that a sword and you have chosen wisely. It says volumes about who you are in my opinion. A dog is family...your dog has given you its undivided loyalty and love all its life. I spent almost $50,000 on my last dog's cancer treatment when she was 10 years old. I drove her 68 mi one way to the best oncology veterinary practice in the the region every Monday for 6 months for chemotherapy, then MRI's and surgery. It gave me 4 1/2 more years with her and was worth every penny. I would spend it again and much more in a heartbeat to have her back. She died in my arms... I still miss her every day and cry often over her passing. I find great comfort in my knowledge that she is waiting for when my time comes to walk with me into the light. Baylee; Until then, I always find some solace in this quote... “Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.” – Erica Jong.

It looks like Morgan takes to the water. My dog is called Odie. I was going to call him Red but Hazel liked Odie, after the dog in the comic strip Garfield. I keep an update on Odie’s progress or the like of it, whichever the case may be. The first photo is when Odie was young. The photo itself is interesting and it took about an hour to figure how to post it as the original was 2,481 KB and of course the forum refused it. I got it down to 37 KB by using this computer. May be helpful for those with enormous size photos and are lost as how to post. When Odie was young. Odie beginning show his age. Relaxing showing much gray as he appears today.

The tester arrived today, surprisingly. I have another package that arrived before this and customs still has it. I did a few quick tests on mostly swords that I was concerned about. The tester is far from industrial quality but as I said should give a ball park figure. As an generalization; all three Universal swords tested <40 HRC. I believe the 1065 steel M1902 is harder than the EN9, BUT I get <40 HRC the lowest reading. I am going to forget the Universal that I was thinking about. I think Skall was getting about 45. Windlass did better with their swords running about 50 and knives 55. I don’t like testing as this scratches the surface and i'll call it quits for the moment. I think that I can polish most scratches out but that’s for another day.

Two more that I doubt will be of interest as such but will possibly put things into perspective, two of my kitchen knives; one by Tramontina, a bread knife, out of Brazil renowned for their machetes 55 HRC and my Bugatti butcher knife 65 HRC.

I think those results mean that Universal Swords made their blades with a low sub 40 HRC hardness with absolute intent, for safety reasons or whatever. In this case I wouldn't expect their 1065 steel blades to be harder. As usual it's not the steel but the heat treatment.

I own one Universal product and will not ever buy another. I should know better than to buy things made by third world companies. I hope you will share your findings with Matt of KOA and I would be interested in his response. All the Universal swords are advertised on KOA as " tempered blade of high carbon steel". KOA should add that the blade is very poorly tempered.
