I was gifted a sword and know nothing about it. Any translation or ideas are welcome to help me understand what I have.

Photos would help! You can't upload attachments from the mobile site, though, you have to either switch to the desktop layout or use some third party hosting service.

Browser in desktop mode and "Add Attachment" button in the right upper corner of the create post area to upload pictures under (!) 1 MB. Or a link to a picture host site.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not an expert with Japanese style swords but from what I've seen, those letters look too crisp and the lines too straight to be done by hand. My guess is that this is one of the many many Chinese "fake" katanas that are often posted and sold for way more than they're worth on Ebay or other online sellers. If it's what I think it is, then it is NOT a functional sword. Do NOT try to cut anything with it and don't even try "dry handling" it, i.e. going through motions or trying to do kata or something. That's just asking for damage and/or injury. All that said, it's much more aesthetically pleasing to look at than most cheap "Sword Like Objects" (SLOs) that are out on the market. I would have no hesitation putting it up on my wall for display purposes. It looks very nice. I could be completely wrong. I'd recommend posting here: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/board/57/japanese-swords
