can anyone tell me what to expect??
I have a bunch of different blades all in the super-budget category, i.e. not to be present in this film.
basically every budk special.
well, they cut stuff, and I am learning what cuts and why and why not, and what to do to try and get more cut out of it, I have a few things I've never cut with yet, like the honshu war sword (black model), a kabar war-sword, a black-ronin wakazashi,
most of my experience so far is on two shinwa swords that I somehow modified to change them, a mono-tempered katana and a "miniature arming sword, which is like smaller but bigger than a dagger (see my pic tag),,,,, a sokojikara t-10 katana, a bk906 (boom, just boom on that thing, cheap steel that works so impressively well that for a short while you can't use anything else), a bk3070 which is like an even smaller arming sword, and not because it's more used, but because it's most recently used for about a week, a forged warrior machete sword, which works but I don't know something doesn't work about it. Maybe the edge geometry, it takes a set pretty easy, maybe it doesn't hold an edge I don't know, but the shape of it is interesting and somehow hard to use on bottles. also bk3648 is super hard to use on bottles.
I really have been respecting my shinwa straight mini-arming sword lately, and the bk3070 just because it's harder to use and I need to be more careful to cut bottles with it, despite the same basic technique used.
-I ordered a zt sharkalope because I thought it would be good, but still challenging to cut with, as it is not inherently designed to cleave materials in twain.
so my shopping list basically includes possibly a more real short straight one-handed sword with these being my top picks: -I could try for an arming sword, maybe the sbg store ones are really good -I could go with a lkchen LK5 magnificent chu jian -I could consider a nice gladius, but I don't really like the "greek looking" ones and want pure function, ----------- or -I could consider a saber or rapier with a cutting edge -I could consider a cutlass,,, which would be like if I chose a gladius bc it were straight and much shorter
but I have been enjoying the straight swords "lunging" form that I have been using to make the cuts more successful, where I lunge a bit to get the sawing translation into the swing. so maybe an arming sword. 200$ doesn't sound that bad.

Given your specified budget and interests, I'd recommend a Kingston Arms Sidesword. Wonderful weapon, sings in the hand and performs nicely. One of my favorite swords period.
That or a good jian. I've been thinking about the Magnificent Chu Jian from LK as well, based on impressions of that brand I think you'd be in for a good time.
I just like the hilt design of the sidesword better than a jian. I feel far more comfortable with that style of weapon as it has similar attributes of a jian but with the benefit of a more secure grip and guard. Many times I feel that the wooden handles on jian don't feel as secure, even with gloves. A cord-wrapped handle on an extremely sharp double-edged blade is a must, as the ONLY time I have lost my grip/control on a sword was with my Cold Steel gim. Scary experience, but thankfully nothing bad happened. The LK jian all have cord wrapped handles, so no worries there. Although, an added plus of the KA sidesword is there is a wonderful detachable pommel for ending thy foe rightly. If you were to ever want a bastard sword, the Hanwei Rhinelander matches the KA sidesword rather nicely. Would be a good...well "daisho" ain't the right word, so "daidai" (well, the opponent certainly would).

(in other words, too good to really make me much better) www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88CLQ&name=Cold+Steel+%2D+Hunting+Sword

(in other words, too good to really make me much better) www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88CLQ&name=Cold+Steel+%2D+Hunting+SwordThe Cold Steel hilt furniture tends to be either cheap Chinese pot metal, or some vaguely ferromagnetic alloy (maybe just a nickel plating). I've seen several of the guards on their European swords break from non-abusive cutting practice. I think there is also a Skallagrim video of this very sword losing the knuckle bow to the torque of cutting into some tree branches, which might be considered abusive to the blade, but certainly not to the guard (which never came into contact with the branch being cut). I just received the two swords I ordered from LK Chen Sword (a Heavenly Horse dao and Striking Eagle jian), and while I haven't had an opportunity to cut with them yet, I can certainly attest to their excellent design and balance. They seem like some of the best value, sword-wise, and I can already tell they should perform very well. They feel surprisingly agile and lively for their respective sizes. Just based on their look and feel, my wife asked me to order one of LK Chen's shorter jian for her (and if you knew my partner you'd recognize that was high praise).

I have a Cold Steel single handed MAA messer and it is a REALLY nice bottle cutter. Other CS swords like the cutlass, not so much.

Can't comment much since I haven't used it myself. But if it's of similar build quality, sure looks like a fun sword. Lightweight and compact, 27 in. is arguably a bit short on the spectrum, but that being said a blade with these dimensions and specs would be a very good close quarters broadsword. Would pair nicely with a shield.

If you're wanting something single handed and chop-n-slice friendly like the above sword (and aren't looking for a katana), try a Chinese dao. Dao tend to be great at cutting if that's what you're looking for. Hanwei makes some that are easy to find, Dynasty Forge (Huano Forge) makes some that are pretty nice but the DF ones are almost always out of stock (shame, as they're cool swords).
