Looks like a French Officers sword. These are not small swords. Too substantial. Were in use from 1816 to the Second Empire and the Third Republic. There should be an emblem on the first (outside) guard shell. This may tell which service and/or Officer grade it was meant for. Together with what is depicted on the pommel it could be nicely dated. Looks very well preserved. The lose wire could be restored. And a good scabbard too! Most of those gave the ghost long ago. Hope the buffalo horn grip is intact and not cracked. With a bit of DIY this can be made to shine again. Very nice. Concur with Edelweiss. Look for stamps on the ricasso and look them up here: klingenthal.chez.com/marquages_etat.htm and here: klingenthal.chez.com/marquages_coulaux.htmSometimes older blades were used.

The only thing you're doing wrong is that Google Drive doesn't seem to allow embedding pictures hosted there on other sites. You can either post links to them on Google Drive, upload them to the forum as attachments if they're under the size limit, or host them on a third party site that allows hotlinking like Imgur or IMGbb. (Personally I find the last option is the easiest and most flexible, plus it saves us storage space. )

Shame it doesn't have markings to identify an owner but I'm very absolutely certain this is a French Model 1872 sword for officers (épée a ciselure); the interesting part is that the 2 silver stars mean it belonged to a Brigadier-general (equivalent of Lt-Gen). Make that hilt shine a bit and it will look stupendous! One example hereAnother here

Yes, the google images are 4mb+ but when you uploaded the others to fb, when I downloaded them, those are like 60kb. Think of an onboard resizer for your own use. It is possible to use img tags for google drive images, let's try this one

Now, I could have done that last night for all of them but I aint gettin paid for this Alternately, you can share an entire folder, or folders from your google drive right click, share with others, copy link, paste drive.google.com/drive/folders/1R7gCmCnldPjOKBdprrlNpu-3FaL-GPzd?usp=sharingIt might behoove someone to create a sticky post tutorial for image sharing but please god no not another sticky thread in this subsection. Speaking of such, it should be possible to partition this subsection with a subforum of current stickies which now fill a page to scroll past but that's not my job. So,, practice with your own images from the first post with the generator link and add your full images (open those in a new tab to see the full size). Later Cheers

Well..somebody answered your prayers Edelweiss. Where are the stickies now? The only one to show up is my sticky polishing thread and that seems to be ,,unstickyfied''.
Please restore my thread to sticky asap and stop f*cking around with stuff on here without asking permission from the sticky thread creators. Are we getting another great mess like the one that made Dave delete his content and practically leave this site for FB?

Well Uhlan, we can hope it is a work in progress. I believe you concurred in another thread that it might be a good idea. Maybe give moderators and administrators the benefit of the doubt. Attitudes, even my own, aren't always productive. Let them build Mecca and then we can bow down to the top five times a day I'm out again for now but I'm around.

Calm down, nothing's gone anywhere. I'm just... experimenting. *ominous giggle*
PS. Oh! BTW, do feel free to discuss further developments on this subject, by all means, but please do it in the Cafe or by PM or such like rather than derail this thread. Thank you!

Sub section which is advertised in great big letters so that people can actually find it, that's fine with me. ,,Experimenting'' without consult not so much. Threads get a bit derailed too. Bloody gave me a heart attack Mok and my adrealine level is still street fight high. Now I'm off to break some stuff.
To get back to business: Is it possible to get an image of the front shell plate? All I see is the back plate and that doesn't tell very much. Also an image of the front facing side (not the top) of the ponmmel cap would help. Maybe those are posted yet but I cannot find them amongst all the GD links? Thank you very much.

Wow! Great pictures.
Pino was right. Model of 1872 for a Brigade General. See l'Hoste ,, les Epees'', page 338, fig. 621. Quite the find.
