I recently purchased a sharp H/T bastard sword blade and some fittings from The Printed Armory. The fittings are lovely and I am quite impressed, although you might notice a few scuffs on mine, but those are my doing. I ran out of 600 grit sandpaper and will need to wait to repolish the fittings until new sandpaper arrives. So disregard those scuffs. The blade is quite well done. The central ridge is even, the fuller is pretty good, and there is no visible secondary edge bevel. I think there was some concern about this in the past, so if that's the case there is some improvement showing with these blades.
I just made a new grip for this sword build out of two bookmarked pieces of white ash. What do you think of the grip wrap? I used veg tan leather and a burgundy dye. The seam is my biggest worry. It feels perfectly smooth, but I am just not experienced enough yet to minimize the appearance of it, or place it on the side of the grip where it is less visible. I suspect this will improve with time. This is the second grip I have ever done.

Oh, that's not too bad! Not at all. Personally, I'd probably make it somewhat slimmer overall, but that's quite decent work you've done. Nice color, too!

I like these grips to be a little wide, but thin. I also like ovoid shapes. It's really personal, isn't it? I really like the color and discovered that you can create an antiqued effect by sanding the leather a little bit and do not shake the bottle of dye beforehand to incorporate the pigments. Some sections are purple, others red, and some are bronze.

That looks great! I’m impressed that it’s only your second try. To echo the above, it looks like it could be a little slimmer. For the seam, did you skive the overlapping edges of the leather? Your dye work really looks good.

Your dye work really looks good. I did skive the edges, but I clearly did not skive them enough. In hand it feels comfortable, so it really is just a cosmetic issue. I think the Medieval eye wouldn't worry about such flaws, but the modern eye does. I'm going to keep practicing. I really enjoy doing this.

Agreed. As long as it feels good, I think it looks just fine. I’m looking forward to seeing what else you create!

I want to make a scabbard next. I also have a custom sword build I am planning along with a big summer project that I am super psyched about: I want to make an aspis, or hoplon.

Wow! Other than the mentioned cosmetics of the seam, that looks fantastic! I'm hoping to give grip making a try in the not too distant future. I have a couple swords I would like to do grips for. I'd be pleased if they came out looking half that good.
You mentioned difficulty in getting the seam along the edge of the grip. Are you able to elaborate on that at all? Just curious about what I may run in to when I finally give this a try.

That's a really good grip for your 2nd try... there are 2 main options to making a sword grip: wood core with leather, or 3D printed core with leather. If you're interested in making a 3D grip, you can make the file here The Printed Armoury Online Grip Maker and then send the file to a 3D printer, but then you'd have to wrap it yourself or get someone else to wrap it afterwards. If you're thinking of using a wood core, chrisperoni created a grip making tutorial many years ago, but is still a great resource for those who want to make their own. You can see the tutorial here: Grip Making Tutorial: Video In 4 Parts

I am really intrigued by 3D printing. I might consider that as an option in the future! I have been using this site as a resource: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_grip.aspJoe, I think the difficulty of getting the seam to be placed along the edge of the grip is that there is very little surface area. I think it's really that simple. I am going to try to place it along the edge the next time. I have a bit of leather left over that I would like to use on another sword grip that is already fabricated. Honestly, the wood core is very easy for me, but working in an apartment with a belt sander, well, it sucks.

That's a great grip wrap! This is part 3 of the videos I made- goes over cutting, skivving, setting seam line, wrapping the leather, etc.
Other than getting the seam up the side, I would also suggest you wrap with separate pieces of string between each riser when tying down the leather during glue-up. This will prevent having impressions in the risers from where the single length of string crossed over each. Cheers!

Thanks so much! I did see this series earlier, but I might consider the sewing method. Incidentally, the impressions you speak of are the result of shoddy work I did underneath joining the risers.

That grip looks great. I would try and keep the seem on the side, I think that looks better, but minor quip. My grips aren't perfect either. Good job!

Nice work! My ONE attempt for the same sword looked....bad. Was functional for a few sessions, then it started to peel...so much learning is involved.
